Bills Emerge as Threat to Land All-Pro WR Brandon Aiyuk Amid 49ers Rift

Up until Week 6, the Buffalo Bills looked to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender until they got exposed by the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6.

Coupled with the increasing number of injuries the team had suffered, the lack of a true, game-changing No. 1 wide receiver became a glaringly obvious area of weakness that many believe could hamper Buffalo once (if) it gets to the postseason.

Reigning MVP quarterback Josh Allen is still playing at a high level — he’s thrown for 2,709 yards and 18 touchdowns through 11 games — but he’s also thrown five interceptions in his last three games, and the Bills have lost four of their last seven.

Though Buffalo has the No. 2 offense (381.8 yards per game) and the No. 5 scoring offense in the NFL (28.3 points per game), it’s clear to those who watch the team play each week, something is clearly off offensively.

Buffalo reportedly wanted to add a top wide receiver before the Nov. 4 trade deadline, but calls for New Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave and Miami Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle proved unfruitful, and the Bills have to make their hopeful Super Bowl run with a receiver corps comprised of Khalil Shakir, Joshua Palmer, Keon Coleman, Tyrell Shavers, and Curtis Samuel.

Brandon Aiyuk Could Be Answer to Big Issue

The San Francisco 49ers and All-Pro wideout Brandon Aiyuk appear headed toward a parting of ways, according to a recent report from The Athletic. The 49ers voided approximately $27 million in guarantees from Aiyuk’s contract for 2026 back in July, and it’s possible the team could release the 27-year-old in the offseason.

If that happens, Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports believes the Bills could be a prime landing spot for the star wideout.

“The Bills have struggled to find a top wide receiver to pair with Josh Allen ever since they traded Stefon Diggs after the 2023 season,” Pereles wrote. “Last year’s second-round pick, Keon Coleman, has been a healthy scratch each of the last two weeks, and in Week 12’s loss to the Texans, no Buffalo wide receiver could do much downfield.

“The Bills are very much in their Super Bowl window, and Aiyuk could be a strong fit in what has been a major team need.”

Bills Still Have a Big Problem That Needs Addressing

Potentially adding Aiyuk in the offseason would be a big coup for general manager Brandon Beane, but the 49-year-old GM has one big flaw that still needs to be addressed.

Former second-round receiver Keon Coleman has been a healthy scratch the last two games. And while there’s a chance he returns to the lineup in Week 13’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s clear things can’t go on the way they currently are.

Coleman has been benched three times during his brief career for disciplinary reasons, including showing up late to a team meeting this year, which prompted his back-to-back scratches this month.

Head coach Sean McDermott has shown optimism the message has been delivered to Coleman loudly by stripping him of his playing time, but perhaps a change-of-scenery trade in the offseason would do both sides some good.
