Bills HC Sean McDermott’s Strong Response on Defensive Playcalling Questions

After starting the 2025 NFL season with four straight wins, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have lost two games in a row against opponents, the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons, whom they were expected to beat.

With the Bills widely considered a legitimate Super Bowl title contender, two straight losses to inferior opponents, especially an AFC East division rival, is a cause for concern heading into Week 7.

The consensus right now, after the loss to the Falcons, is that the defense might be the issue for the Bills, with some calling for head coach Sean McDermott to take over the playcalling duties on that side of the football.

During media availability on Tuesday, McDermott was asked if it was time for him to take over playcalling on defense. He didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts on the subject.

“No,” McDermott said. “We’re trying to improve in every area, and defensively, I think there are some things that we’re doing well and some things we have to improve on, but that has not crossed my mind at this point.”

McDermott gave defensive coordinator Bobby Babich a vote of confidence after addressing whether it was time to make a change in terms of playcalling on defense.

“We have a lot of confidence in Bobby and our defensive staff. I thought they made a lot of good defensive adjustments last night. The second half in particular. At halftime, we came out and played really well after half.

“Overall, again, within our building, I’m confident in the people in our building, whether it is this situation or other situations that we can get the job done.”

Despite the team’s defensive issues after six weeks, McDermott seems content and confident in his team right now, a stance that may change quickly in the coming weeks if the Bills continue to struggle.

The team heads into a much-needed bye week after two consecutive losses, with the team having time to regroup before taking on the Carolina Panthers on the road in Week 8 at Bank of America Stadium.

Are the Bills in Trouble After Two Straight Losses?

Coming into the 2025 campaign, the consensus around the league was that it could be the Bills’ year to break through and finally win that elusive Super Bowl title. Allen was coming off a career year and his first NFL MVP award, with the team looking as talented as any in the AFC.

Despite a 4-0 start, the Bills have shown some flaws on both sides of the football, with Allen struggling with turnovers and coming off a game where he was sacked four times, despite his best efforts to avoid being taken down.

Fortunately, after two tough losses, the Bills will have a chance to address some issues during their bye week before taking on the Panthers in Week 8 on the road. Buffalo may have hit a bit of a speed bump in their season, but there’s plenty of time to bounce back with a vengeance and return to form as arguably the best team in the league.
