Bills’ Joey Bosa Facing NFL Punishment After Aaron Rodgers Incident

Buffalo Bills fans likely breathed a sigh of relief following Sunday’s 26-7 Week 13 win over the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers.

The win erased the bad taste in their mouths from the previous week’s 23-19 loss to the Houston Texans — a game in which quarterback Josh Allen was sacked eight times — and it put a little more distance between Buffalo and Pittsburgh, which were both jockeying for the seventh and final playoff spot in the AFC.

It also likely dissuaded some of the worries about the team’s recent defensive performances. The Bills held the Steelers to a meager 166 yards of total offense and 10 first downs while forced two turnovers.

While Buffalo had plenty of reason to celebrate following Sunday’s win, one of the team’s top players may be getting some bad news by the weekend from the NFL league office.

Joey Bosa Likely Facing NFL Punishment

On the first play of the third quarter, Bosa went all-out trying to make a play.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took the snap from the pistol formation, and after scrambling around a bit in the pocket, he was hit from behind by Bosa. The play resulted in a fumble, which was scooped up and run in for a touchdown by cornerback Christian Benford to put the Bills ahead 10-7.

Bosa’s hit rocked Rodgers, who laid on the ground for a few moments before getting up. The Pro Bowl edge-rusher wasn’t flagged for roughing the passer, but it’s likely he’ll be penalized by the NFL on Saturday when the league releases its list of weekly fines.

Video replay of the incident showed Bosa seemingly landing on Rodgers with his full body weight, causing Rodgers to faceplant into the turf and get up with a bloody nose.

Per the NFL rule book, players can be fined for landing with their full body weight on a quarterback. First offenses carry a $17,389 fine, and second offenses escalate up to a $23,186 fine.

The NFL has already fined players this season under the body weight rule. Minnesota Vikings linebacker Dallas Turner was hit with a $17,389 penalty back in Week 10 for landing with his full weight on Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.

Bosa himself has been fined once already this year — a $17,389 penalty for roughing the passer against Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield in Week 11.

Bosa is Having a Career-Reviving Season

Despite the likely incoming fine heading his way, Bosa is having a career resurgence in his first season in Buffalo.

Through 12 games, the 30-year-old defensive end leads the team in several defensive categories including pressures (41), hurries (25), QB hits (11), tackles for loss (8), sacks (5), forced fumbles (5), and pass-rush win-rate (16%), per Pro Football Focus.

Bosa’s 41 pressures and 25 hurries are his most since the 2021 season, when he totaled 69 and 50, respectively, with the Los Angeles Chargers, and his 11 QB hits are his most since the 2020 season when he had 22.

The former No. 3 overall pick signed a one-year, $12.6 million contract with the Bills, and he’s certainly making a case to get a multi-year extension in the offseason, whether it be in Buffalo or somewhere else.
