Bills’ Joey Brady Leads Odds for Coveted College Football Head Coach Opening

The NFL trade deadline has passed, and the Buffalo Bills chose not to make any significant moves for either the remainder of this season or the future.

While Buffalo remains focused on capturing the Super Bowl title in February, it was also aiming to avoid any decisions that could jeopardize its long-term success. Nonetheless, one potential risk to the Bills’ future is the possibility of losing offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

Brady is among the most sought-after coaching prospects for head coach positions next season. While an NFL team might look to hire him, college programs could also consider him a prime candidate.

Joe Brady Favored to Land LSU Head Coaching Job

One job that Brady is familiar with opened up last week when LSU fired head coach Brian Kelly.

Brady was LSU’s passing game coordinator and receiving coach in 2019, when the Tigers went 15-0 and won the national championship.

BetOnline suggests that Brady might return to Baton Rouge to become the head coach of LSU. The sportsbook has listed Brady with +300 odds to take over as the Tigers’ next coach, marking him as the front runner among all potential candidates.

LSU’s offense was among the finest in college football history in 2019, led by quarterback Joe Burrow, who threw for an astounding 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns. His remarkable performance earned him the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Following this success, the Cincinnati Bengals selected Burrow as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Burrow has always shown great respect for Brady. When the Bills fired offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey in the middle of 2023 and promoted Brady to offensive coordinator, Burrow had plenty of positive things to say.

“Joe’s awesome, Joe’s very creative,” Burrow said, via Buffalo Bills On SI. “He always has something for a certain look that you’re seeing on tape to take advantage of that. It’s a big opportunity for him, I’m excited for him. He helped me a lot. He helped me become the player I am today. Nothing but love for Joe.”

Bills Possible Playoff Run Could Hurt Brady’s Chances

Seeing Brady return to coaching at LSU would be interesting. After he spent one season with the Tigers, Brady moved on to become the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. In 2022, the Bills hired him as their quarterbacks coach.

LSU might consider hiring a college football coach currently active in the sport, such as Lane Kiffin, the head coach at Ole Miss, who has been rumored to be a candidate for the position, as well as the vacancy at Florida.

One thing that could hinder Brady from landing the LSU head coaching job is if the Bills make a deep playoff run that stretches into February. The Tigers will need to hire a head coach well before then to kick start their recruiting efforts and navigate the transfer portal. It’s unlikely that Brady would leave the Bills in the postseason to take on the LSU job, so if Buffalo continues to win, there’s a good chance he won’t have the opportunity to step into a college football coaching role anytime soon.
