Bills Miss Out On Big Fish In Wide Receiver Pond At Trade Deadline

Options are dwindling for the Buffalo Bills on NFL trade deadline day. For a team that is heavily rumored to be targeting a high profile wide receiver before 4 PM today, the latest news eliminates a potential candidate.

Ian Rapaport broke the news minutes ago on X.

“Surprise: The #Raiders are, in fact, dealing WR Jakobi Meyers to the #Jaguars, per me and @TomPelissero,” the post reads. “It’s a fourth and a sixth for Meyers. A few months after his initial request to be traded, Meyers is dealt.”

This comes days after The Athletic’s Diana Russini reported that the Bills were in fact making calls on the former Las Vegas Raiders wideout who is now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“The Bills were one of the teams that inquired in recent weeks about Saints WR Chris Olave, sources say,” Russini posted three days ago. “New Orleans is still expected to retain Olave, while Buffalo is making calls on other receivers, including Jakobi Meyers.”
If this is true, and Olave is off the market as well, the Bills may have to get creative if they want to beef up the offense.

Jaguars Trade Is Not Ideal

Think back to draft night in April. The Jacksonville Jaguars entered the night with the fifth pick. Cleveland Browns were on the clock drafting second overall. The chime plays. The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded with the Cleveland Browns to move up three spots and draft wide receiver/corner back Travis Hunter.

In that deal, the Jags gave up a first round pick, a second round pick, two fourth round picks, and a sixth round pick. A historically large haul.

Now, six months later, they are giving up two more draft picks to once again address the wide receiver room…

I am not making any judgement on the prospect of Travis Hunter or saying that this was a bad move. But it is irrefutable that giving up five picks, including a first and a second, to draft a receiver and then still being forced to make a move for one at the deadline is simply not ideal.

Who Can The Bills Make A Run For

Though unlikely, the Miami Dolphins are expected to be heavy sellers this afternoon. This means wide receiver Jaylen Waddle could be on the move. Had the Dolphins and the Bills not been bitter division rivals, I would consider this a stronger possibility. But the proximity of the two organizations makes this a pipe dream.

One name to watch is Jaylin Hyatt. The 2023 third round pick has never gotten going for the New York Giants. He hauled in 23 passes for nearly 400 yards as a rookie, but has failed to combine for 100 yards over the last two seasons combined. A change of scenery is exactly what that young man needs.

Then finally I would look at the Washington Commanders. With quarterback Jayden Daniels season possibly finished, and sitting with a record of three wins and five losses. They no longer need a guy like Deebo Samuel. He is in a contract year, which means that he can be rented and discarded after the year. It makes a lot of sense for the Bills to bring in a vet and the Commanders to load up on draft picks.
