Bills Mitchell Trubisky Receives High Praise Before Week 1

Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Josh Allen is one of the best in the NFL. Last season, he brought home his first NFL Most Valuable Player of the Year Award. Allen is looking to win his first Super Bowl this season. Since Allen is so great, there is no need to worry about the backup quarterback coming in to replace him unless an injury happens.

The Bills Have One of The Best Backup QBs

The most concerning aspect of football is the high incidence of injuries that occur. If something were to happen to Allen and he had to miss some time, the team would be in good hands. At this training camp, a competition arose between the backup quarterbacks, Mitchell Trubisky and Mike White. Trubisky ended up beating out White and is now the No.2 quarterback.

Backup quarterbacks might not seem that important since they aren’t supposed to play. But having a great one can be a game-changer. The NFL season is long, and quarterbacks are going to miss time. In 2017, Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending injury in December. Backup quarterback Nick Foles replaced him, winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history two months later.

Trubisky might never have to carry a team to a Super Bowl like Foles, but he could start for a month and keep Buffalo in the playoff race.

Mitchell Trubisky Receives High Praise

There are a handful of teams that have quarterback starters that are worse than Trubisky, and Justin Carter from Fansided thinks Trubisky is one of the 18 backup quarterbacks in the NFL that are better than the worst starting quarterback in the NFL.

“We’re starting with a very borderline case. Trubisky has struggled when pressed into starting action since leaving Chicago, but the former first-round pick has a big arm and should still have enough speed left to escape pressure. Turnovers have always been an issue, but if you just need someone to go out there and fire some YOLO balls off, Trubisky isn’t the worst option,” Carter wrote.

Trubisky was the No. 2 pick by the Bears in the 2017 NFL Draft. Even though he didn’t work out there, he did gain a lot of NFL experience. He tried to be a starter with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 but lost his job early in the season to rookie Kenny Pickett.

There are a few teams for which Trubisky could start this year. The New Orleans Saints are running out their second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler, while the Indianapolis Colts have Daniel Jones.

Trubisky is probably on the same level as Jones. He likely would be the starting quarterback if he played in New Orleans or Indianapolis.

Not every quarterback is made out to be an NFL starter, but being a solid backup will keep a player around forever. Trubisky is entering his ninth NFL season and will likely be around for many more years to come.
