The Buffalo Bills needed to clear space for their newest addition to the offense, and found it by cutting a wide receiver for the second time in the matter of a week.
The Bills addressed some of their passing game woes by signing former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman. The Super Bowl champion will start on the practice squad, where the team will have the chance to elevate him up to three times before needing to make a decision on whether he joins the active roster.
But the Bills needed to cut another player to make room for Hardman, meaning it was once again the end of the line for Kristian Wilkerson.
Bills Making Moves on Offense
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that the Bills made a flurry of roster moves, adding Mecole Hardman to the practice squad while parting ways with both Wilkerson and defensive end Kingsley Jonathan. The team also placed rookie edge rusher Landon Jackson on injured reserve following his injury in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.
The Bills had released Wilkerson at the start of last week, but he didn’t stay away for long. The Athleticâs Joe Buscaglia reported that Wilkerson was already back in the facility by the middle of the week.
âThe Bills re-signed WR Kristian Wilkerson to their practice squad Wednesday,â Buscaglia wrote. âHe was on the practice field today. The team had released him from the practice squad on Tuesday, according to the leagueâs transaction log.â
Wilkerson joined the Bills in the summer, competing for a spot in a crowded wide receiver room. Though he missed the final cut, Wilkerson returned as a member of the practice squad.
The veteran receiver has been in the NFL since 2020 but hasn’t seen much action on offense, making just six receptions for 60 yards with three touchdowns.
Bills Desperate to Boost Offense
The Bills have struggled to get consistent production from their wide receiver group, especially in their three losses this season. The receivers have failed to get separation from defenders, putting quarterback Josh Allen under increased pressure and allowing teams to focus on stopping running back James Cook.
The Bills hoped to address the offensive deficiencies with Hardman’s signing, which gives them a trusted veteran.
The move came after the Bills came up empty-handed at the trade deadline, with general manager Brandon Beane saying the team had difficulty finding a partner willing to make a deal. Beane said at the time that he was content with the construction of the roster, but hinted that he would be looking to make more additions.
“I ain’t giving up, but I also believe in our roster, too,” Beane said, via the team’s official website. “I do believe we can win a championship with this roster. We build it in the spring and through the summer, when we cut to 53, I want to at that point have the best team. I don’t really want to need the trade deadline, but I’m always going to look.”
