The Buffalo Bills took a hatchet to the top of their wide receiver room last offseason, moving on from No. 1 Stefon Diggs and No. 2 Gabe Davis and instead adopting a more spread-out approach.
The new “everybody eats” strategy found great success in 2024, with quarterback Josh Allen leading the Bills to one of the top offenses in the NFL. The Bills could add another big target to the mix for the coming season, with one insider predicting they could trade for a $68 million wide receiver in search of a new home.
Bills Trade Proposal Adds Trusted Target
Bleacher Report’s Mitchel Milani broke down potential trades for Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, who is going into the final season of his three-year, $68 million contract and is expected to hit the trade block.
McLaurin has been a steady and consistent target since coming into the league in 2019, topping 1,000 yards in each of the last five seasons despite unsteady quarterback play through much of his tenure.
Milani suggested the Bills would be a great fit for McLaurin, pairing him with the reigning league MVP and adding a new element to Buffalo’s offense.
“I think Terry McLaurin would be perfect for Josh Allen,” Milani said. “He can get down the field and stretch the defense out. Having a player on the outside that can win down the field is gonna make the Bills pretty much an unstoppable offense.”
The Bills lacked a true field-stretching receiver last season, a role that Davis occupied during his time with the team and Diggs, to a lesser extent.
Bills Brought New Talent to the Offense
The Bills have already made some moves at wide receiver this offseason, allowing trade-deadline acquisition Amari Cooper to hit free agency and bringing in some trusted targets in Elijah Moore and Joshua Palmer. The team also added a potential receiver and return specialist in Lavishka Shenault Jr.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane has also said the team is leaving the door open for Cooper’s potential return, though SI.com’s Ronnie Eastham suggested it would likely only come if the veteran receiver accepted a reduced price.
“It doesn’t seem like the Bills are interested in bringing Cooper back, but if he’s willing to sign with the Bills and accept a lesser role within the offense, the Bills could be an option,” Eastham wrote. “Last season, he showed decent chemistry with Josh Allen and proved that while he isn’t the Cooper of old, he can still make plays from time to time.”
The Bills spent most of this year’s NFL draft filling holes on defense, but did use a seventh-round pick on Maryland wide receiver Kaden Prather. ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg suggested he could add an important size element to the offense, but may need to find a role on special teams to make the roster.
“Prather’s size stands out — 6-foot-3, 204-pounds — as well as his ‘work habits,’ which were noted by general manager Brandon Beane,” Getzenberg wrote. “He had 162 catches, 1,966 yards and 12 touchdowns in 48 career college games at West Virginia and Maryland. Special teams will be an area that should help him try to make the roster.”
