Bills Predicted to Cut Ties With 2,200-Yard WR After Landing Brandin Cooks

The Buffalo Bills are revamping their wide receiver room on the fly, adding a trio of veterans midseason in the hopes of jump-starting their struggling offense.

The latest addition could mean the end of the line for one of the biggest offseason additions, however.

The Bills announced on Tuesday that they signed 32-year-old Brandin Cooks after he was granted a release by the New Orleans Saints. Though the Bills had room on the roster to add Cooks, his addition created a crowded wide receiver room and could lead the team to part ways with veteran Elijah Moore.

Bills Could Release One Receiver, Shelve Another

The Bills already made some changes with the addition of Mecole Hardman and activation of Gabe Davis after he returned from injury. Though Hardman was placed on injured reserve after his first game, there are still eight wide receivers now with the addition of Cooks.

SI.com’s Ralph Ventre believes the Bills could place ailing veteran Curtis Samuel on injured reserve to clear room in the wide receiver room, but are also likely to cut ties with Moore

“Ultimately, Moore, who is playing on a one-year contract, appears to be the odd man out. Although quarterback Josh Allen has complimented the wide receiver’s work ethic on multiple occasions, Moore has struggled to become a consistent factor on offense,” Ventre wrote.

“In nine games, Moore has totaled 112 yards on nine receptions. He has 24 yards and one touchdown as a rusher.”

The Bills had high hopes for Moore when he was signed in the offseason, one of the biggest additions to the offense in free agency. Moore came into the league as a second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2021, amassing 200 receptions for 2,162 yards and nine touchdowns despite playing with only subpar quarterbacks during his time in New York and with the Cleveland Browns.

Bills Struggling in Passing Game

Though the Bills succeeded in taking an “everybody eats” approach in 2024, they have not been so successful in spreading out the ball this year. They are on pace to have no 1,000-yard receivers for the second straight year, with tight end Dalton Kincaid leading the team in receiving touchdowns despite only appearing in eight games.

The team also has some question marks around second-year receiver Keon Coleman, who showed flashes of strong play in his rookie season but has fallen into disciplinary problems. After being benched for the opening drive in October’s loss to the New England Patriots, he has been benched for the last two games after missing another team meeting.

Though the Bills are not expected to part ways with Coleman, the second-round pick who is still under contract for two more seasons after 2025, his immediate future remains uncertain. The Bills are looking to rebound from last week’s loss to the Houston Texans with a game against another fringe playoff team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

If Cooks is not able to take the field in time for the game, it could give Coleman an opportunity to return to the field for the first time in three weeks.
