Bills Predicted to Part Ways With Veteran WR After Offseason Signing

After parting ways with top receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis last offseason, the Buffalo Bills adopted a new approach on offense.

The team called it “everybody eats” — the idea of spreading the ball around to a bigger group of talented pass catchers rather than focusing on feeding targets to a top-tier player like Diggs. The approach worked, with the Bills turning in one of the league’s top offenses, though they ultimately fell short of their goal of reaching the Super Bowl.

But the “everybody eats” approach could require the Bills to look around for new talent, which the team did this offseason but adding a group of veteran receivers to compete for spots on the depth chart. One insider believes it could be a tall task for one of those new additions.

Bills Face Tough Decisions

The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia predicted that the Bills would part ways with offseason signing Kristian Wilkerson. The team announced on May 20 that they signed Wilkerson, noting that he came with a light resume from his previous stop in the NFL.

“The 28-year-old receiver spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders where he appeared in three games and totaled three catches for 18 yards and a touchdown,” the team noted. “Wilkerson first entered the NFL in 2020 with the Titans as an undrafted free agent. He played collegiately at Southeast Missouri State (2015-19). He will wear No. 82 for the Bills.”

Buscaglia noted that there could be a lot of competition for the final roster spots at wide receiver, noting that the top of the depth chart — Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, and Joshua Palmer — all appear to be “locks.” That leaves nine receivers fighting for the two remaining spots, with Buscaglia predicting the team would keep two other offseason additions in Elijah Moore and Lavishka Shenault.

“The Bills will have two additional roster spots to play with for the first six games due to suspensions to Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi. That would be just enough time for the team to figure out if Shenault will be their kickoff return specialist for the whole of 2025, and if they need to move on, they can very easily,” Buscaglia wrote.

Bills Add Young Talent

While the Bills looked mostly to free agency to add talent to their wide receiver room, the team did use one draft pick on a new wide receiver. Seventh-rounder Kaden Prather is also predicted to miss the final cut, but would be a strong candidate to return on the practice squad.

The No. 240 overall pick said he’s excited to get working with his teammates this summer and start catching passes from reigning league MVP Josh Allen.

“By the time the seventh round came, I didn’t know where my head was, but once (the Bills) called me, I was just grateful for the opportunity,” he said, via the Buffalo News. “Being around Josh Allen and just the whole Bills organization – Buffalo bleeds football. It’s a family environment. This whole process has been nothing but great.”
