Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen regularly says he doesn’t care much about career accolades, only his quest to lead the team to its first Super Bowl.
Both of those took a hit after Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, which dropped the team’s odds of reaching the pinnacle of the NFL while also slashing Allen’s odds to repeat as league MVP. The Bills now face a two-game deficit to the New England Patriots for the lead in the AFC East, leaving the team with a challenge in climbing back.
Josh Allen’s MVP Case Takes a Hit
As SI.com’s Peter Dewey noted, Allen was overtaken by a division rival in the MVP odds after this weekend. Allen struggled against an unusually aggressive Dolphins defense, throwing an interception and losing a fumble in the 30-13 loss.
“New England is now 8-2 and has a stranglehold on the AFC East after the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen lost to the Miami Dolphins in Week 10,” Dewey wrote. “That loss not only impacted the Billsâ division odds, but it shifted Allen from the favorite to win MVP all the way down to fifth in the latest odds.”
The MVP leader is now Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, with another group of quarterbacks close and Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor the only tailback in the group.
“Matthew Stafford is now second in the odds at +300 after the Los Angeles Rams improved to 7-2 in the 2025 season, and heâs joined by Patrick Mahomes (on the bye in Week 10) and Jonathan Taylor, who ran for 244 yards in three scores in an overtime win for the Indianapolis Colts, who are now 8-2 as well this season,” Dewey wrote.
Josh Allen Takes Blame for Dolphins Loss
As he always does following losses, Allen put the blame for Sunday’s performance on his own shoulders. The Bills quarterback said he needed to be better at finding open receivers and avoiding pressure.
âIâve got to be better. Iâve got to be better in the protection game, and the pass game, and the run game. All of it,â he said, via The Athletic.
âIt starts with me, so Iâve gotta be better.â
âIt starts with me. But we didnât execute. I didnât execute.â
Bills head coach Sean McDermott also expressed frustration at the team’s struggles in pushing the ball downfield in the passing game. Many of Allen’s passes have been near the line of scrimmage, with no receiver emerging as a true deep threat.
âWell, it is (frustrating) because itâs an important part of our offense,â McDermott said. âWeâve got a great quarterback, and you want to be able to move the ball two-dimensionally. We should be able to move the ball with Josh through the air.â
The Bills aimed to bring in some help this week, signing veteran wide receiver Mecole Hardman to the practice squad. The team has also hinted that veteran Gabe Davis, who signed with the Bills this summer, is close to being fully recovered from a knee injury that cut short his 2024 season and could take the field again soon.
