The Buffalo Bills once again crashed out of the playoffs in an ultra-close, emotionally-crushing game against the Kansas City Chiefs, now for the fourth time in the Josh Allen era.
But it is not Allen, the current reigning MVP, who could be on the move soon. In fact, it is quite possible that there is no realistic trade proposition that could entice the Bills to ditch their All-Pro QB at this point in time.
Instead, it is Sean McDermott who is on the ‘hot seat’ according to CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan, after having lost once again to the Chiefs in the postseason.
Sean McDermott’s Job Not Totally Secure Heading Into 2025
“Sean McDermott’s tenure in Buffalo has largely been a success.” Sullivan wrote on Friday, “Accounting for regular season and postseason, he’s tied for the second-most wins (93) by a head coach in his first eight seasons in NFL history. The Bills have won five-straight division titles and are coming off a 2024 campaign where they reached the AFC Championship (the second appearance in the McDermott era).
However, that’s where the success has stopped. Under McDermott, Buffalo has been unable to get over the hump, win the conference and advance to the Super Bowl with the chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. As they’ve been with most other teams in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the main roadblock for Buffalo, which has lost to them in four of its past five playoff runs.
With a loaded roster headlined by NFL MVPÂ Josh Allen, McDermott has been under scrutiny for not being able to get his team to that next level. If he cannot break through that ceiling yet again in 2025, it may force the Buffalo brass to seriously consider finding a new leader who may have a better chance to take the franchise up a notch. ”
What Does McDermott Need To Do To Keep His Job In 2026 And Beyond
Unlike a coach like Brian Daboll, who seems to be on the verge of getting fired unless he has a winning, perhaps even playoff year in 2025, there is not a feeling of anguish or malcontent with McDermott.
He has been a core part of changing the culture in Buffalo and bringing substantial success to the organization, including – as Sullivan notes – five straight AFC East division titles and two AFC Championship appearances.
But, as all coaches know, the only real thing that matters is championships, to which McDermott and the Bills organization still have none.
There is something about getting so close to the Super Bowl almost every single year and never managing to beat the big bad wolves that are Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, which tests fans’ patience – almost more than continuous losing.
If the Bills once again miss out by a hair’s thread on making the Big Game, ownership and general manager, Brandon Beane, could decide that it is time to move in a different direction.
