Blue Jays-Dodgers Trade Idea Sends Versatile Starter to Los Angeles

The Toronto Blue Jays may be a bit hesitant when doing business with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who just ripped Toronto fans’ hearts out in October, but now that some time has passed, the Blue Jays could have some decisions to make with their current roster.

One of those decisions for the Blue Jays is what to do with swingman pitcher Eric Lauer.

Eric Lauer wants to be a starter for Toronto, but with several options in the rotation, the question has been raised whether the Blue Jays should trade Lauer now, before he hits free agency after the 2026 season. A recent mock trade idea by Fansided’s Mark Powell suggests the Dodgers should be the aggressors in a potential Eric Lauer trade.

According to Powell, the Dodgers should look to acquire Eric Lauer after Roki Sasaki’s poor performance in spring training. Here is the full trade package that he puts together:

“Dodgers receive: Eric Lauer

Blue Jays receive: SS Kellon Lindsey, RHP Brooks Auger”

That’s two prospects in exchange for Lauer, who posted a 3.18 ERA last season over 15 starts and 104.2 total innings. Last August and September, Eric Lauer was the Blue Jays’ best starter.

However, that doesn’t mean that trade rumors won’t still persist. In a recent think piece by BlueJaysNation.com, the question is asked if the Blue Jays should trade Eric Lauer at some point before Opening Day, or during the season:

“But the trade possibility of Lauer is a much more interesting case. He has value — whether that’s as a left-handed starter or reliever — and the Blue Jays may have a surplus of arms at the end of spring training. For any team that’s desperate for starting pitching depth or a swingman, Lauer may become an attractive option.”

Could this Trade Idea Work?

This trade idea could work, but it would likely require Los Angeles, which is the king of riches in MLB, to give up something a little better than two pitching prospects that barely crack the organization’s top-30.

The Blue Jays know better at this point after the 2025 Fall Classic to just go out and hand Los Angeles players basically for free. And knowing the Dodgers, Lauer would become a CY Young candidate after joining the team.

However, with Lauer’s rotation spot unclear, free agency nearing, and losing his arbitration case with Toronto, it’s always fun to speculate what blockbuster trades could transpire across MLB.
