Blue Jays Get the Worst News as Bo Bichette-Alex Bregman Hope Dims

The Toronto Blue Jays have been busy little bees. They haven’t wasted time since dropping Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Between signing Tyler Rogers to fortify the bullpen, as well as adding Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to the starter rotation, their pitching is poised to improve this MLB season. The one area that could use a big boost is their offense. Toronto would like to add a big bat and has been linked to a Bo Bichette reunion. The Blue Jays have also been linked to Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman, Yoan Moncada, Ketel Marte, and Kazuma Okamoto.

Toronto has done what it can to secure organizational depth this offseason. Elian Guzman, Jorge Burgos, Geovanny Planchart, Celwin Hurkmans, Hedbert Perez, and Isay Veras will help the Blue Jays’ pitching and positional needs in the long term.

However, a new report is putting a damper on the Blue Jays’ hopes of finding a potential replacement for Bichette.

Toronto Blue Jays Dealt Bad News on Alex Bregman

Recently, steam has picked up regarding the Blue Jays’ potential interest in third baseman Bregman. Most recently playing for the Boston Red Sox, Bregman is one of several players the Red Sox have been eyeing to solidify their infield this winter.

“If they can bring back Bregman, sign Bichette, or add Ketel Marte, they catapult up,” Jon Heyman wrote when discussing the Red Sox rankings amongst the early winners of free agency. “The Red Sox are also considering Bo Bichette, Kazuma Okamoto, and Ketel Marte. The Pirates, Angels, Jays, D-Backs, and Cubs are among others interested in Okamoto.”

However, a new report features an MLB analyst who is convinced that there is only one clear destination for Bregman.

“I think it’s a matter of time before they (Diamondbacks) get Alex Bregman,” Dan Bickley said on Arizona Radio on December 26th, 2025. “I think that’s a done deal, to be honest with you. He’s going to be on this baseball team…Can they trade Ketel Marte beforehand? There’s a weird game of chicken going on. So I think Alex Bregman is going to be here regardless.”

Bregman has connections to the Blue Jays with former teammates George Springer and Myles Straw. If they were to add Bregman, it would absolutely soften the blow of a potential Bichette departure. However, this Arizona Diamondbacks news, while not definitive, doesn’t inspire confidence.

In 2025, Bregman swung for 118 hits, 62 RBIs, and 18 home runs to go along with a .462 slugging percentage in 114 games.

Blue Jays Get Bad News on Ketel Marte

Heyman has also been clear about his thoughts on the Blue Jays being in on Marte. During a recent Bleacher Report stream, he revealed who is still in on the second baseman.

“I’m still sticking with either the Tampa Bay RaysSeattle Mariners, or Boston Red Sox,” Heyman said. “I don’t think it’s gonna be the Philadelphia Phillies or Toronto. These teams that are looking at Bregman could look at Marte, but I’m still looking at those teams.”

Marte would be a great addition to whichever team he lands on. He landed 136 hits, 72 RBIs, 28 home runs, and four stolen bases in 126 games. Additionally, he swung for a .517 slugging percentage.

Blue Jays Have Bregman/Marte Alternatives

Despite the double dose of bad news, there are a couple of options still available. Moncada was one option who was just linked to the Blue Jays on December 26th.

MLB insider Francys Romero cited the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates as suitors for Moncada alongside the Blue Jays.

Okamoto has also been linked to the Blue Jays. The Red Sox have interest in the Japanese slugger, as do the Pirates (according to MoccBomb).

Of course, the Blue Jays could retain Bichette, and the chances of that happening increase by the day.

Either of these players could be an option for the Blue Jays. With the holidays behind us, things could pick up in a hurry before the calendar turns over to 2026.
