The Toronto Blue Jays’ 2025 season ended with a gut-wrenching defeat in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But that’s nothing to be ashamed of. The Blue Jays had a remarkable run that ended against baseball’s best. It wasn’t like Toronto got swept out in the Wild Card round by a seemingly inferior opponent.
No, the Blue Jays lost to the defending World Series champs. The Dodgers are not back-to-back champions, something that hasn’t been accomplished in a quarter-century.
The Blue Jays’ 2025 season was one of resilience. The club fought through adversity, overcoming somewhat of a slow start to win the American League East. The Blue Jays ended up tied with the New York Yankees, sporting a 94-68 record. But the Jays took the division as they held the tie-breaker.
The first-round bye allowed the Jays to reload. The ALDS against the Yankees was an exciting series that saw the Jays beat one of their archrivals.
But it was the ALCS that poured on the memorable moments. George Springer’s home run in Game 7 against the Seattle Mariners will forever go down in Blue Jays’ history as one of the more memorable.
Toronto’s resilience was pushed to the max following their 18-inning defeat in Game 3. The unbelievable game ended on a sour note. But that didn’t stop the Jays from beating the Dodgers in Games 4 and 5 on their home field.
The stage was set for a Blue Jays victory at home. But Yoshinobu Yamamoto had other ideas. The Japanese hurler was the difference for Los Angeles.
The Dodgers earned their second straight championship, and Yamamoto became a worthy recipient of the World Series MVP honors.
Future Looks Bright for Blue Jays
The future looks bright for the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays erased the biggest cloud hanging over the team by signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the start of the season. The 14-year mega deal allowed the Jays’ franchise player to focus on playing the game.
But that’s just the beginning. The emergence of players like Ernie Clement, Addison Barger, and Nathan Lukes provides Toronto with a spark heading into next season and beyond. The team’s core also includes Alejandro Kirk. Kirk has established himself as an All-Star catcher, while players like Andres Gimenez have proved their value.
Then, there’s the pitching staff. Trey Yesavage emerged as a future ace. The bullpen was also a strength that carried the Blue Jays throughout the season and playoffs. If everything holds together, Toronto should be a serious contender in 2026.
Question Loom for Toronto’s Offseason
The Blue Jays’ offseason will not be devoid of questions. A number of issues remain up in the air. The biggest one will be Bo Bichette. The Toronto shortstop had a resurgent season. After missing the first two postseason rounds, he came back and had a solid World Series. The Jays would love to re-sign him, but that may not be an easy task.
Beyond Bichette, the bullpen and outfield demand reinforcements. The rotation also has numerous question marks with Shane Bieber, Max Scherzer, and Jose Berrios up in the air.
Despite the lingering questions, the Blue Jays will be in a solid position to repeat as American League champs in 2026. Perhaps fans will have to wait one more year to see the World Series trophy return to Canada.
