Blue Jays Urged to Sign 2X All-Star Starter to Clear Rotation Woes

The Toronto Blue Jays have endured some tough luck to their starting rotation to start the season, especially with Cody Ponce going down with what looked like a brutal leg injury.

However, being that it’s still early in the MLB season, there is still time to make additions via the external market, which includes free agency. There’s a handful of semi-quality starters available. Lucas Giolito tops the list of available starters, but a depth option is southpaw Tyler Anderson. A recent prediction by FanSided.com’s Zachary Rotman suggests the Blue Jays sign Anderson to fix some of their early-season rotation woes.

Should the Blue Jays Sign Tyler Anderson?

It’s a little odd that a two-time All-Star like Tyler Anderson remains unsigned. He’s 36 years old, but has made 25+ starts in four straight seasons. That seems like enough production for at least a minor league year.

“Anderson didn’t excel in a lot of areas, but he did rank in the 80th percentile in hard-hit rate in 2025. Forcing soft contact with an elite defensive team behind him can lead to success. This is a flier worth taking given the position Toronto is currently in,” wrote Rotman.

In 2025, Anderson made 26 starts with the Los Angeles Angels and boasted a 4.56 ERA over 136.1 innings. In 2024, Anderson was an All-Star with the Angels, and he also made the All-Star team in 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which was arguably his best season as a pro.

Tyler Anderson’s Potential Fit with the Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays have a few different starters on the Injured List at the moment, including Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, Cody Ponce, and Trey Yesavage.

These injuries piling up may not be that big of a deal for the Blue Jays, who still have a solid rotation, but the beast of the AL East is real, and Toronto needs to ensure they don’t fall too far behind.

In that same breath, there’s only been one week of baseball played, and the Blue Jays are clearly playing for the long haul, but Toronto really should consider making an external signing.
