Blues ‘Open for Business’ in Trade Market After Benching Star

The St. Louis Blues seem set to make major roster changes in the near future. The team currently sits bottom of the Central Division after winning just two of their last nine games. Overall, the Blues have picked up just 12 points in 15 matchups to start the 2025-26 season.

Defense is undoubtedly the team’s major weakness at the moment. After all, the Blues have allowed an NHL-worst 3.87 goals per game during the current campaign. Jordan Bennington also holds the lowest save percentage (.859) among NHL goalies with at least eight starts. Backup netminder Joel Hofner, however, has not fared much better with his .864 SV% in seven total appearances between the pipes.

While defense is a significant concern, the Blues are also not scoring enough goals. St. Louis currently ranks 23rd in the league with just 2.73 goals scored per game. With the Blues struggling mightily all over the ice, GM Doug Armstrong appears set to shake up his roster at some point this season.

St. Louis Blues Captain Brayden Schenn Could Soon be Dealt

GettyBrayden Schenn may be dealt as Blues management leans towards a rebuild.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli reports that Armstrong has let other teams know he is ready to trade some of his players. Seravalli has even suggested that team captain Brayden Schenn may very well be dealt in the coming months. “The Blues are open for business, and one name certainly to keep an eye on between now and the March trade deadline is Brayden Schenn,” claimed Seravalli.

“We know that Schenn was nearly dealt last year in the trade deadline season in this thin center market. But Schenn, having the no-trade clause at the time, wanted to stay, and the Blues delivered with a playoff appearance.”

“This time around, Schenn has a 15-team no-trade clause and is certainly a name to keep an eye on as Doug Armstrong, not one to sit and wait, could certainly be aggressive as he usually is.”

Off the ice, the Blues have financial issues to deal with as well. According to Spotrac.com, St. Louis has completely maxed out their cap space. Assuming that the team continues its downward spiral, offloading some big contracts, including Schenn’s $6.5 million AAV, is a major possibility.

Jordan Kyrou’s Future with Team Uncertain After Being Benched

Along with Schenn, there are also uncertainties surrounding Jordan Kyrou. The star winger previously led the team with 36 goals during the 2024-25 campaign. Despite the standout season, there were plenty of rumors regarding his future with St. Louis during the offseason. While he was not dealt in the summer, he may very well not remain with the Blues beyond the trade deadline.

Blues head coach Jim Montgomery then fueled speculation on Kyrou’s place in the team by making him a healthy scratch for the November 6 game against the Buffalo Sabres. The Blues went on to win the matchup 3-0. After the rare victory, Montgomery explained his decision to bench Kyrou. “There were several people we weren’t happy with the effort last night,” said the coach, as reported by ESPN.

“It didn’t matter the role, there was a lot of guys that didn’t play up to their role or responsibilities on the team. And the players we ended up going with we thought gave us the best opportunity to win tonight.”

Kyrou signed an eight-year, $65 million contract with St. Louis in 2022. His $8.12 million AAV cap hit is joint-most on the Blues alongside Robert Thomas. If the star winger is available in the trade market, several teams will likely be interested. Kyrou is currently tied for second in the team with eight points.
