Bold Red Sox Prediction’s Have Boston Making Two Notable Starting Pitching Additions This Offseason

The Boston Red Sox are expected to be one of the more active teams in MLB this offseason. Last offseason, the front office made the necessary additions in both the trade market and free agency to bring the team back to the playoffs.

Now, more of the same is expected out of Boston this winter, and a recent starting rotation projection suggests that the team will make a couple of notable transactions that would greatly improve the pitching staff, including signing starter Dylan Cease and trading for MacKenzie Gore.

Adding Dylan Cease and MacKenzie Gore Would Be Massive

In a recent prediction piece by Bleacher Report, writer Joel Reuter does his yearly starting rotation projections for all 30 MLB teams, and the Red Sox are featured with two new additions.

“However, they could also be one of the market’s most aggressive teams, targeting one of the top-tier starters in free agency and swinging a deal to acquire someone like MacKenzie Gore or Joe Ryan. They have the spending ability and the young trade chips to get it done.”

In the projection, Dylan Cease is slotted in as the No.2 option, and Gore is right behind him at N0.3.

Dylan Cease is thought to be the top right-handed pitcher in free agency, and MacKenzie Gore is one of the top trade candidates, according to multiple reports. But could the Red Sox land both? First, Boston would have to decide about current free agent Lucas Giolito and whether or not to bring him back. If they don’t, that means the Red Sox have a clear need in the rotation.

Boston has a strong farm system, and Reuter makes the great points that Craig Breslow and the rest of the front office have shown a willingness to spend, and the team has tradeable players like Wilyer Abreu, and other top prospects to use in a deal with the Nationals for Gore.

Trading for Gore seems like the longer shot option here. Dylan Cease’s market is going to be vast, but Washington has been unclear on whether or not they will actually field trade offers for Gore.

What Will It Take For Boston to Sign Dylan Cease?

As noted, Dylan Cease is the best right-handed starter on the market, but that means he is going to come at a cost.

Several predictions show that Cease is going to receive a contract upwards of $180 million.

According to Spotrac, his market value is seven years, $184 million.

Last offseason, Boston showed no hesitation in opening up the checkbook for southpaw Garrett Crochet, who quickly became the team’s ace.

Pairing up Crochet and Dylan Cease would form one of the best strikeout duos in MLB.
