Breaking Down the San Francisco Giants Wild New Drama With Rafael Devers

Before the Boston Red Sox traded him to the San Francisco Giants, Rafael Devers had a very public feud with Boston over which position he would play.

First, Devers was annoyed after being displaced from third base by the signing of Alex Bregman and moved to designated hitter. Then, the Sox asked Devers to play first base following a season-ending injury to starting 1B Triston Casas. Devers refused.

But after his trade to San Francisco, Devers said he would play wherever the Giants wanted him to in his introductory press conference. Manager Bob Melvin then asserted that the plan was to eventually give Devers some starts at first base.

San Francisco seemed to have won Devers’ trust and affection in a way Boston never did.

But, that wasn’t the end of the story. Devers still has yet to play the field for the Giants, and questions about when he would do that got louder amid a damaging new report on Tuesday July 8, 2025.

Red Sox broadcaster Will Flemming, the brother of Giants broadcaster Dave Fleming, shared on WEEI 93.7 that Devers was supposed to work out with San Francisco Giants legendary first baseman Will Clark during the Giants-Red Sox series. Clark came to all three games, thinking Devers would show up.

Devers stood him up all three times.

Will Clark Speaks Out on the Topic

Last week on Wednesday July 2, 2025, Will Clark went on his own podcast, Deuces Wild with Eric Byrnes and Will Clark, to speak on Devers’ no-show.

He confirmed that Devers had indeed stood him up three times. But, he also gave Devers the benefit of the doubt, saying he believed Devers was a no-show because he didn’t want to show up the Red Sox by practicing first base in front of their dugout a mere week after the trade.

Still, Clark had a strong message for Devers about the next time Clark schedules a workout with him.

“Rafael Devers, next time I’m in San Francisco, your a– will be on the field at first base,” Clark said. “Just letting you know that. Even if I have to go grab you by the f—– back of the neck and drag your a– out there, you will be at first base.”

Should the Giants Be Concerned?

The main negative takeaway that Giants fans should have about this is that Devers obviously has communication issues.

Red Sox legend David Ortiz has been an outspoken critic of Devers’ lack of communication since the trade. Now there was an obvious breakdown in communication between Clark and Devers. This is a problem the Giants need to address as soon as possible.

But as for Devers’ future playing the field, the Giants don’t need to be too concerned, yet.

Clark is not a direct employee of the Giants, and Devers had a good excuse for not wanting to work on first base during the Red Sox series as Clark mentioned.

If Devers misses another scheduled workout with Clark or starts turning down direct coaching from Giants coaches such as Mark Hallberg, then they have a potentially bigger issue on their hands.

Plus, the Giants will continue to get solid first base play from Wilmer Flores and Dominic Smith in the meantime. They don’t need Devers to play first base now. They are developing him more long term to be able to make some starts there.

What do you think of this whole situation, Giants fans? Is Rafael Devers out of line?
