Brett Hull Reflects on a Hilarious Early Moment With the Red Wings

Brett Hull recently recalled a brief exchange he had with a teammate early in his tenure with the Detroit Red Wings. He had an unexpected locker room moment and responded with a one-liner that still makes him laugh today.

Hull signed with the Red Wings as a free agent in 2001 after a successful tenure with the Dallas Stars. He hoisted his first Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999 and was joining a talented roster in Detroit.

The legendary goal scorer, known for his charismatic personality, immediately struck up a great rapport with head coach Scotty Bowman. During an episode of his Ice Guardians Podcast, Hull recalled having conversations with Bowman in his office.

Hull revealed that it caught his teammates by surprise because it was uncharacteristic of Bowman. He recalled one teammate, in particular, being shocked, and the two had a hilarious exchange.

“I remember when I first got to Detroit, I’d go in there into the coach’s office and just chit-chat with [Bowman] for 15-20 minutes and have a coffee,” Hull said. “I’d come back into the room and it was like I had three heads. And I’m like, ‘What are you guys looking at?’ One guy goes, ‘I’ve been here eight years and he’s never said one word to me.’”

He continued:

“I go, ‘Well, maybe you’re just not as interesting to talk to as I am.’”

Brett Hull Reveals What Scotty Bowman’s Practices Were Like

Brett Hull also explained how Scotty Bowman would run his practices during his time with the Red Wings. He noted that Bowman had a strong attention to detail and didn’t strived for excellence.

During the episode of his Ice Guardians Podcast, Hull revealed that Bowman’s assistant coaches would typically run the practices. However, there was no denying that the legendary coach was still very much in charge. He would even instruct the team to repeat some drills if they didn’t meet his standards.

“[Bowman] was like a savant,” Hull said. “No, [the assistant coaches] kind of ran it, but you knew who was in charge because if you didn’t do [the drill], it was, ‘Do it again, do it again.’”

Hull Shares Bowman Story from Red Wings’ Stanley Cup Appearance

Hull had a strong stint with the Red Wings that last from 2001 until 2004. He was towards the end of his career and was a part of Detroit’s legendary 2002 Stanley Cup winning team. It was a star-studded roster that featured several Hall of Famers.

During the ’02 Stanley Cup final, Hull shared that Bowman took his frustrations out on cameras that were placed along the glass. He noted that the former Red Wings head coach didn’t appreciate the cameras being there, especially during their morning skate.

“We were in the finals and you know those cameras that they have in the rink? They’re $100,000 a piece,” Hull said during the Ice Guardians Podcast. “We’re out there at morning skate and Scotty’s not out there. And all of a sudden, he comes out, skates right through one of our little drills we were doing and goes from pillar to post, and he’s swinging his stick and knocking the $100, 000 cameras off the glass into the stands.”

He continued:

“You kind of have to know how Scotty is. He’s a little bit strange, a little bit out there,” Hull said “He just kept saying, ‘They’re not supposed to be there. Those cameras aren’t supposed to be there.’”
