Brewers Brush Off Red Sox’s Wilson Contreras After HBP Warning

Monday night’s hit-by-pitch involving Wilson Contreras didn’t end when the game did — it carried straight into the postgame clubhouse.

After being plunked yet again by the Milwaukee Brewers, the Boston Red Sox first baseman issued a blunt warning about what could come next. But Milwaukee’s response made one thing clear:

They’re not taking the message seriously.

Brewers Dismiss Contreras’ Warning

Following the Brewers’ 8-6 win, Milwaukee players downplayed the situation, signaling they don’t view the latest incident as anything out of the ordinary.

“We’ve seen that skit for the last 10 years,” Christian Yelich said. “It’s nothing new.”

Starter Brandon Woodruff, who hit Contreras during Monday’s game, echoed a similar tone — calm, measured, and largely unfazed by the postgame comments.

“We’ve been through that — nine years for me. It seems like every year,” Woodruff said. “He’s trying to play a game and he’s trying to get his side fired up. Once I knew what was going on, I wasn’t going to let it affect me on the mound.”

That response stood in sharp contrast to Contreras’ frustration, which has been building over time.

A History That Keeps Boiling Over

Woodruff’s pitch in the third inning marked the sixth time he alone has hit Contreras in just 29 plate appearances — a staggering number that adds fuel to a long-running tension.

Across his career, Contreras has now been hit 24 times by Brewers pitching, a pattern that helps explain why Monday’s moment quickly escalated.

The situation nearly boiled over immediately. Contreras exchanged words with Woodruff after being hit, drawing the attention of home plate umpire Chris Conroy and his brother, Brewers catcher William Contreras, who stepped in to help separate the two.

Contreras Sends Clear Message

After the game, Contreras made his frustration unmistakable.

“They always say, ‘I’m not trying to hit you.’ That gets old. So next time they hit me again, I’m going to take one of them out. That’s a message,” Contreras told reporters, per MassLive’s Sean McAdam.

The comment raised the stakes — not just for the remainder of this series, but for future matchups between the two clubs.

Contreras’ actions during the game also reflected that edge. He later slid hard into second base in an attempt to break up a double play, a play that left Brewers infielder David Hamilton shaken.

Brewers Not Backing Down

Despite the warning, Milwaukee’s response suggested nothing will change on their end.

Woodruff’s comments made it clear he views the situation as part of an ongoing pattern rather than something new — or something worth escalating.

That disconnect — one side issuing a warning, the other dismissing it — is what keeps situations like this alive.

What began as another hit-by-pitch has now turned into something more: a familiar tension resurfacing, with neither side willing to back down.

And after Monday night, it doesn’t feel like it’s going away anytime soon.
