Brian Schottenheimer Has Strong Words for Cowboys Defense

It wasn’t a pretty one for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, losing 31-14 to the Chicago Bears. The Bears have been one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL to start the year, but given how poorly the Cowboys’ defense has played throughout much of the campaign, it isn’t too surprising to see them give up 385 yards and 31 points against Chicago.

Things were simple for the Cowboys and head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who is managing the third game of his NFL career. He said it was a humbling loss. He added, however, that it’s a game he has to look back on and try to grow from.

“We didn’t play well,” he said, per the official team website. “We didn’t play well enough to win, and so that’s why we’re sitting here with the loss.

“This is one of the games that you look at and you’re like, ‘Yeah, I mean that’s humbling, and it sucks.’ But we can play pretty good, and we’ve gotta play better to win in this league.”

Cowboys Should Worry About Offense

Giving up 31 points in the NFL typically isn’t a recipe for success for any team in the league, but for the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott has to be better. While he finished 31 of 40 for 251 yards and one touchdown, he also threw two interceptions. Speaking to reporters after the game,

Prescott said that his focus is clear, stating that he just has to worry about the offensive side of the football. While the defense hasn’t played well, his focus remains on what he can control.

“I’ve got to go look at it from the offensive standpoint, [and] I know scoring 14 points is never going to be OK,” said Dak Prescott after the loss.”And damn sure not with this offense, this unit, the team, the players that we have and, what, and six of those were field goals. Not acceptable, not to our standard, not anywhere in what we believe in and what we’re capable of doing.

“We had a chance right there to cut it back to 10 [points], and to turn the ball over in the red zone, that’s unacceptable.”

Dak Prescott Gives Blunt Message to Cowboys

Not having CeeDee Lamb out there for much of the game certainly didn’t help the Dallas Cowboys, as Lamb’s injury could be a few weeks, depending on the severity. Jerry Jones indicated on Monday that he could be set to hit the IR.

However, given the Cowboys haven’t found much success over much of the past few years, many fans don’t want to hear about the injuries and other excuses. The simple fact of the matter here is that the Cowboys have to play better football, and until they do so, fans won’t have much more to say.

“We were biting ourselves [in the foot],” Prescott said. “We’re kicking ourselves, and that’s the reason that we’re not converting to touchdowns and it’s the reason that we’re not getting first downs. It’s gotta start there. Everybody’s gotta look in the mirror and say, ‘How can I be better?’”
