Danny Welbeck required oxygen as he was stretchered off in Brighton’s win against Newcastle (PA)
Danny Welbeck was able to travel home with his Brighton teammates after being stretchered off during the Premier League win against Newcastle United on Saturday.
Welbeck scored Brighton’s first-half winner at St James’ Park, which is his fifth goal in the Premier League this season so far.
However, the 33-year-old was forced off in the 81st minute after taking a knee to his lower back in an aerial challenge with Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar.
Welbeck was immediately treated by emergency medical staff and required oxygen as he left the pitch.
Speaking after the game, Brighton head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, revealed that Welbeck was taken to hospital for scans on his back.

‘I can’t give any updates yet,’ Hurzeler said. ‘He will have a scan and hopefully we will know more later.
‘I think he got an opponent’s knee in the back. Hopefully it’s not that bad, but we can’t be sure about that.’
Welbeck was then cleared to fly home with his teammates, with Brighton’s social media accounts posting a picture of the striker on the flight.
The post included the message: ‘Dat guy’s a bit bruised and battered, but the good news is our match winner at St James’ Park, Danny Welbeck, is on our British Airways flight home.
‘Also, a huge thank you to the fans who gave Danny a brilliant ovation when he was stretchered off.’
Brighton’s next game is at home to Wolves in the Premier League next Saturday.
