The Denver Broncos are bolstering their roster ahead of their Week 4 showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals. Specifically, Denver turned to former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback A.J. Woods, who joins the fringes of a talented group for the Broncos.
However, the Broncos were not done there ahead of “Monday Night Football.”
It all occurred one day before the first practice for the week, which adds even more intrigue to the Broncos’ moves.
Ex-Commanders, Eagles CB A.J. Woods Joins Broncos Practice Squad
GettyA.J. Woods #38 of the Washington Commanders walks off the field with an apparent injury against the Miami Dolphins.
Woods was an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh. He began his NFL career with the Washington Commanders, signing with the Eagles in February. The Eagles waived Woods at the end of the preseason, and he remained a free agent until joining the Broncos.
He has not played in an NFL game, but did receive snaps in the preseason over the last two seasons. Woods did not fare well.
He beat out six other players who visited the Broncos for tryouts on Wednesday.
Woods is joining a Broncos’ CB room led by reigning Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II and has rookie first-round pick Jahdae Barron, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2025 draft, on the bench behind Ja’Quan McMillian and Riley Moss.
The Broncos also have depth in second-year player Kris Abrams-Draine on the 53-man roster, along with Jaden Robinson and Reese Taylor on the practice squad, and now Woods.
In addition to adding Woods, the Broncos brought up a familiar face.
Broncos Make Final Roster Decision About Adam Prentice
GettyAdam Prentice #46 of the Denver Broncos warms up before the game against the Tennessee Titans.
Woods takes over fullback Adam Prentice’s spot on the Broncos’ practice squad, but that did not spell the end of the former New Orleans Saints blocker’s tenure in Denver.
He received a promotion.
“Denver promoted fullback Adam Prentice from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced Wednesday,” DenverBroncos.com’s Aric DiLalla wrote on September 24. “The Broncos had an open spot on their 53-man roster and are not required to make a corresponding move.
“Prentice was elevated for each of the Broncos’ first three games and needed to be signed to the active roster to continue to play for Denver this season.”
DiLalla noted that Prentice has played 16% of the Broncos’ offensive snaps so far this season.
Prentice caught his only target, gaining 4 yards in the Broncos’ regular-season opener against the Tennessee Titans. However, he has not received any carries. Notably, Pro Football Focus has given Prentice descending blocking grades since the opener.
Broncos 1st Practice Report Something to Monitor
GettyDenver Broncos head coach Sean Payton looks on against the Indianapolis Colts.
The additions of Prentice to the 53-man roster and Woods to the practice squad are a source of intrigue for the Broncos, who do not need to make a corresponding roster move to accommodate the former signing.
However, there is more intrigue around who the Broncos will have available on Monday night, specifically with tight end Evan Engram and head coach Sean Payton keeping mum on injuries.
Engram missed his first game of the season in Week 3 with a back injury.
The Broncos are also without starting linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who is on injured reserve with a quad injury. Getting Engram and Greenlaw, who were prized free agent signings this past offseason, back is critical for the Broncos to find their stride for the rest of the season.
