Bo Nix used his Friday hit on The Pat McAfee Show to fire a playful shot at the Kansas City Chiefs and flex a little for a Denver Broncos team living near the top of the AFC. When McAfee reminded him that heâd just âbeat my Chiefs,â Nix smiled and answered, âWell, somebody else is about to beat your Chiefs this weekend.â
It was lighthearted, but it fit the moment for a Broncos group that just knocked off Kansas City and sits tied for the best record in the conference at 9-2. It was a second massive message he’d fired after the Chiefs game just this week.Â
Bo Nix Talks Chiefs, Close Games & Broncosâ New Identity
Nix joined the show via video as McAfee broadcast live from Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, ahead of ESPNâs College GameDay and Oregonâs showdown with USC.
After the Chiefs jab, the conversation quickly turned to why Denver keeps closing out tight games. McAfee cited Nixâs five fourth-quarter comebacks and called finishing âa trait that great teams have,â then asked whatâs different from last year.
Nix pointed straight at the other side of the ball. He said Denverâs defense lets the offense breathe because the Broncos âfeel comfortableâ that group will come up with a stop, praising the pass rush, coverage and âerasersâ on the back end. He admitted the offense has been up and down, but pushed back on the idea that Denver is only a fourth-quarter team, saying theyâre just great at finishing football games and finding âtimely possessionsâ when it matters most.
Later, when a host asked if the 9-2 Broncos have a bunker mentality while national conversation focuses on whatâs âwrongâ with the Chiefs, Nix said the team actually talks about how close they are in the locker room. He contrasted this season with 2024, admitting that at times last year they didnât really expect to pull out close games.
Now, after stacking multiple late wins, he said thereâs an internal belief theyâll find a way, with a defense they can lean on, offensive playmakers ready for big moments and kicker Will Lutz coming through in crunch time.
âOne of the Best Coaches in Americaâ: Nix Gushes About Dan Lanning
The segment opened with a mini Oregon reunion. Head coach Dan Lanning was on set in Eugene as Nix came on the screen, and the Broncos quarterback was asked what itâs like to play for him.
Nix didnât hold back. He said Lanning âdoesnât fake itâ on camera, that what viewers see is who he is all the time, and called his former coach âone of the best coaches in Americaâ who âhelped me get to where I amâ and whom he âowesâ¦a lot.â He added that he loves Lanning, cherished their âgreat two-year runâ together and âwould run it back any dayâ if he could.
When McAfee offered to ship Oregon gear his way from the swag box Lanning brought to set, Nix laughed that the Ducks âtake care of us just fineâ and that former players already have all the Oregon gear they need.
College Reps & QB Evolution: Nix Makes His Case
Asked whether his long college career helped him hit the ground running in the NFL, Nix said he felt as ready as possible, but that the league is âits own thingâ where you still need live reps before you truly feel prepared every week. Even so, he argued that thereâs nothing wrong with going back to school and playing more, pointing to himself and fellow multi-year starters like Jayden Daniels as examples of how it can pay off.
On his body and playing style, Nix revealed that this offseason he focused on maximizing how athletic he can be instead of just adding bulk. He listed himself at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, saying thatâs âplentyâ for his frame, and emphasized that in todayâs NFL the separating trait is the ability to escape â moving away from pressure and scrambling for first downs â citing Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen as models for how much that stresses defenses.
âGo Ducksâ: Nix Drops a 31-17 Oregon-USC Prediction
Before signing off, McAfee gave Nix a sweeping shot of the trees around Autzen to take him back to his Oregon days. Thatâs when the Broncos quarterback slipped into full Ducks mode.
Nix closed the segment with a simple âGo Ducksâ and then went on the record with a score prediction, saying he thinks Dante Moore and the Oregon offense will put up 31 points while the Ducksâ defense holds USC to 17 in a 31-17 Oregon win.
Between poking at the Chiefs, pumping up the Broncosâ new identity and stumping hard for Oregon and Lanning, Nix managed to feed both fanbases in one segment â and he sounded extremely comfortable doing it.
