Browns Coach Makes Final Call on Shedeur Sanders’ Future Ahead of Week 6

The Cleveland Browns have announced their backup quarterback for Week 6.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Friday that Shedeur Sanders would be the backup quarterback in Week 6.

“Shedeur will be the backup,” Stefanski said on Friday… “Like I told you guys on Wednesday, I’m always thinking about our players and what’s best for our players. I want to make sure when it comes to young football players, particularly when it comes to the quarterback position, you are intentional about your decision-making, and that’s really what it is. Excited for all of our guys.”

The decision comes after Stefanski didn’t announce a backup quarterback following Cleveland trading Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals.

There was some talk that the Browns could sign Bailey Zappe to the active roster and make him the backup, while keeping Sanders as the emergency third-string quarterback. However, Stefanski has named Sanders the backup quarterback, meaning he is just one play away from entering the game.

Sanders Focused on Helping Gabriel

Dillon Gabriel is set for his second career start on Sunday, and Sanders said he’s making sure his fellow quarterback is prepared.

The Browns are set to take on a very tough Pittsburgh Steelers defense. So, Sanders said he wants to make sure Gabriel is more than ready and prepared to go against them.

“We’re going to make sure we do everything we can to make sure Dillon’s ready for the game,” Sanders said. “Whatever that means. Each and every day, even when Joe was the starter, preparing the right way and be ready to know that you could get out there at any point in time. I’m overly confident within myself. I know when I first got here, I’m ready to play, but it’s up to the coaches and whatever decision they make then, I’m fine with.”

Although Sanders has yet to see the field, the rookie quarterback is in a good mental spot and is excited about the quarterback room.

“I’m in a great mental space overall,” Sanders said. “So I would say you tend to get a little bit more excited when you see a light at the end of the tunnel, for sure. … Whatever my role is here, I’m thankful. I’m happy just to do that.”

The Browns are 5.5-point underdogs on the road on Sunday.

Browns’ Gabriel Focused on Improving

Although Gabriel was praised for his play in his first career star, he wasn’t thrilled about it.

Gabriel felt like he had a lot to clean up and improve on entering Week 6.

“A lot to clean up,” Gabriel said on Oct. 8. “There’s always going to be good and bad, but I think just having a calm persistence to attack it regardless of the result and try to get better within your process. But is there things I want back? 100%, you know what I mean? I think that’s for everyone in this game, but I think you got to look at it and find solutions and be solutions-based that can help the outcome here in the future.”

Gabriel was 19-for-33 for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first career start.
