After what already seemed like the most crowded quarterback room in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns doubled down and signed Tyler Huntley. The former Pro Bowl quarterback is decent and has proven to be serviceable throughout his long professional career. However, the Browns still have many questions internally about the other five quarterbacks they already have on the roster. That includes Dillon Gabriel, who has been putrid throughout parts of training camp. Last Friday, it was reported that he had only completed three of 14 passes, something the Browns never want to see.
Others have even taken it a step further, including Daryl Ruiter out in Cleveland, saying that he isn’t good, and not only is he not good, but he isn’t an NFL quarterback.
âHeâs not good, heâs not an NFL quarterback, not right now,â said Ruiter. âThe fact they keep running him out there for first-team reps. Part of it I get because Kenny Pickettâs banged up with a hamstring injury, so thereâs not a lot he can do.â
âBut this goes back. They have been putting him out there first with the 11-on-11 going back to the offseason program. Theyâre cramming this guy down our throats, and itâs not good. Itâs not a height thing, itâs not personal. I mean, heâs rolling out, and he canât hit guys that are wide open.â
Gabriel’s Career Outlook
Gabriel still has plenty he has to work on for the Cleveland Browns, but it’s also unfair to suggest that he’s anything more than a second or third-string quarterback at this stage in his career. That isn’t a knock on him by any means, but it’s the reality of being selected in the third round by the Browns.Â
It isn’t like the Browns selected him with the second overall pick, which they initially had before trading it to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, Ruiter argues that the Browns are trying to make him seem like a first-round pick, and he isn’t a fan of that.
âHe is not all that great at times during the warmup periods,â said Ruiter. âHeâs pretty good at 7-on-7 when thereâs no offensive and defensive lines, but heâs just not a good quarterback.â
âHeâs a third-round pick, and the problem that I have right now is that the Browns are forcing me to look at a third-round pick who has no business being in contention to start a football game this year. Theyâre forcing me to evaluate him like he is a first-round pick and like he is a starting quarterback in the NFL.â
Some Analysts Believe Thereâs Something There With Gabriel
Outside of Ruiter, some believe that the Cleveland Browns might have something with the youngster. According to ESPN, an anonymous AFC executive stated that he’s a good player and that he’s just a bit undersized. That’s a problem, and something Gabriel can’t fix, but the other parts of his game could be there.
If they are, the Browns might eventually have something.Â
“He’s been a team captain since like middle school, been good everywhere he’s been,” an AFC executive said. “He’s a good player. It’s just that he’s tiny.” That last part is hard to ignore when watching him, but he throws a tight spiral and with touch.
