Browns Dump Lineman After Blowout Loss to Reunite With Receiver

The Cleveland Browns made some roster moves following a blowout loss to the Chicago Bears, dumping an offensive lineman and bringing back a wide receiver.

The Browns waived guard Garrett Dellinger, who made his debut with the team on Sunday against the Bears. With an open roster spot, Cleveland brought back wide receiver Jamari Thrash, who was waived just before Sunday’s game.

Trash was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of last year’s draft and finished his rookie season with just three catches for 22 yards. Despite the modest production, he stood out during the offseason and training camp, positioning himself to take on a meaningful role in Cleveland’s thin wide receiver corps.

“He’s had a really strong spring,” Stefanski said during camp. “He’s here all the time working on his body. Very intelligent player—he can line up in multiple positions, which I think is valuable. And he’s caught the ball well. The quarterbacks like how he gets open. He finds a way to get open against zone and man coverage.”

That didn’t translate to the regular season. Thrash has just 10 catches in nine games for 107 yards. He’ll now get another chance to put up some numbers with the Browns.

Browns Offense Coming Off Rough Performance

The Shedeur Sanders-led Browns offense sputtered against the Bears. After a four-touchdown performance, Sanders passed for 177 yards and three interceptions. A large chunk of his production came on two long passes to Isaiah Bond.

However, the Browns are playing shorthanded on the offensive line, with Joel Bitonio the last man standing from the starting unit.

“Obviously some good throws down the field, made some explosive plays. There’s definitely plays that he wants back, that he can be better, whether it’s a decision or a ball or those types of things,” Browns head coach Stefanski said. “But I thought he fought till the end and has the right attitude that he’ll just keep learning from all of these experiences.”

Stefanski acknowledged the injuries haven’t made things easier, but the Browns are dealing with the challenges week by week.

“We’re focused on trying to give our guys a game plan that we can go execute, play fast, and go find a way to score points,” Stefanski said. “And there’s gonna be varying factors to each one of those games, whether it’s the opponent, whether it’s guys that are available or unavailable. And we just got to do our jobs and give our guys a game plan to go let them play fast.”

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Back Jerry Jeudy After Costly Drop

The Browns have not got the production they expected out of their wide receiver corps this season, and that starts with Jerry Jeudy. A Pro Bowler a year ago, Jeudy has just 40 catches for 519 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Jeudy nearly added another touchdown to his stat line against the Bears. However, a perfect ball at the pylon from Sanders hit him in the chest and bounced into the hands of a defender for an interception.

Instead of dogging his top pass-catcher, Sanders showed support for Jeudy after the game.

“It’s going to happen,” Sanders said. “It is what it is. I’m not one to ever kick somebody down when he’s down. He understands it’s a big play and I’m sure he’s hard on himself, so it’s no need for me to be extra and do that.”

The Browns face a stiff test as they look to rebound this week against the Buffalo Bills.
