The Cleveland Browns are entering the 2025 campaign with one of the most unique quarterback situations in recent memory. While Joe Flacco has been named the team’s Week 1 starter, it’s looking more and more likely that the team will also carry former first-round pick Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders on their roster entering the season as well.
Quarterback problems have plagued the Browns throughout their franchise’s history. One guy who managed to hold down the fort for Cleveland under center for eight-and-a-half seasons was the legendary Bernie Kosar, and he recently received an encouraging update that will surely catch the attention of fans everywhere.
Bernie Kosar Close to Receiving Liver Transplant
After a controversial pre-draft process, Kosar ended up getting selected by the Browns in the 1985 NFL Supplemental Draft. Kosar quickly took over as the team’s starting quarterback, and his billing as Cleveland’s quarterback of the future made him quite a popular figure among fans, especially once his play improved.
In 1986, Kosar led the Browns to 12 wins before he earned his first and only Pro Bowl selection in 1987 when he threw for 3,033 yards and 22 touchdowns over 12 games of action. Kosar would remain Cleveland’s starter until 1993, when head coach Bill Belichick benched and ultimately released him.
Kosar quickly latched on with the Dallas Cowboys, where he would win the only Super Bowl of his career, before closing out his career with a three-season stint with the Miami Dolphins. In recent years, Kosar has dealt with some health issues, due in large part to his need for a liver transplant. After being on the liver transplant list for over a year, Kosar revealed that he is close to receiving his long-awaited treatment.
“It’s been a challenging time mentally and physically,” Kosar said, per John Kosich of News 5 Cleveland. “You know it looks like it could be any day now. To really realize that I’m going to be getting a liver from somebody that really could have a bad accident today. From a psychological standpoint, I don’t wish any ill or issues like that on anybody, and to think that that’s kind of what we’re waiting for right now, it’s spiritually conflicting.”
Browns Hoping to Get Some Answers in 2025

Kosar represented something that the Browns haven’t had a lot in their history, and that’s consistency. In 2025, Cleveland will be looking to find something similar to that at the quarterback position. Flacco will get the first shot to provide that consistency, but in the long term, Cleveland is hoping one of Pickett, Gabriel, or Sanders can snatch the starting job.
And yet, while the Browns have a plethora of options they can turn to, hopes aren’t high for the upcoming season, as it is widely being viewed as a rebuilding season of sorts. If that can help Cleveland land a high pick in the 2026 NFL Draft that could be used on their quarterback of the future, then they may be able to accomplish their goal of finding a consistent option under center. It just may take a little bit longer than expected.
