Browns Make 2 Roster Moves With Young Cornerbacks Before Steelers Game

The Cleveland Browns have been busy after returning home from London, England, which is where they played their Week 5 contest against the Minnesota Vikings. On Tuesday, veteran quarterback Joe Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals after Dillon Gabriel turned in a strong outing in his first start of his NFL career.

As it turns out, that was only the start of the moves the front office would be making ahead of their upcoming action. With the Browns suddenly having a spot on their roster up for grabs, the team made a pair of moves involving young cornerbacks Dom Jones and Dee Williams that quickly caught fans’ attention.

Browns Sign Dom Jones to Active Roster, Add Dee Williams to Practice Squad

While Cleveland’s offense has struggled to start the new season, its defense has been one of the most fearsome units in the league. Led by a dominant front seven and a solid secondary, opposing teams have been struggling to score against the Browns, and while that’s only yielded one win so far, Gabriel’s first start indicated that better days could be ahead.

Keeping the squad in tip-top shape is going to be important, especially as injuries begin to pile up. At the cornerback position, Martin Emerson Jr. and Anthony Kendall are both on injured reserve already, and while Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome II, and Myles Harden have been an effective trio, the team needs to make sure it has all of its bases covered.

That led to the front office pulling off a pair of moves at this position on Wednesday. The first saw undrafted rookie Dom Jones get signed to the active roster from the practice squad, filling the roster spot left vacant in the wake of the Flacco trade. Filling Jones’ spot on the practice squad is another cornerback, Dee Williams, an undrafted corner from the 2024 draft who has previously spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants.

“The Cleveland Browns have signed CB Dom Jones to the active roster from the practice squad. In addition, the team has signed CB Dee Williams to the practice squad and placed CB Ameer Speed (foot) on practice squad/injured,” the team announced on its official website.

If the Browns’ offense could have been even a little bit more productive through their first five games, there’s a chance they could have a 3-2 record instead of sitting at 1-4. Gabriel showed promise in Week 5 against the Vikings, and while there will surely be some bumps in the road moving forward, the hope is that his improved play under center can help the team grind out victories.

Cleveland will get another opportunity to see what its team looks like under Gabriel’s lead when it takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. The Steelers are fresh off their bye week, and with a 3-1 record, they are in firm control of the AFC North division. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon, and the Browns will be motivated to get back in the win column and hand their longtime division rival a big loss.
