The Cleveland Browns are adding a weapon to their arsenal for a Week 10 matchup against the New York Jets, activating wide receiver Cedric Tillman.
The Browns made the official announcement on Tillman’s status on Saturday. Cleveland also added safety Christopher Edmonds to the active roster.
The Browns’ offense is in need of a spark, particularly in the passing game. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has struggled and just two of his 21 completions in the Browns’ Week 8 loss to the New England Patriots went to wide receivers.
Tillman will give Gabriel another capable, big-bodied target. He will not have an injury designation for Sunday’s matchup, meaning there’s no question about whether he’ll suit up.
“I thought Ced looks really good. I think he’s worked very hard in his rehab, so it looks like he’ll be good to go,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “Obviously, Ced’s a good player. He has made a lot of plays for us over his career. So, it would be a big boost if we can get him out there.”
Browns Eager to Integrate Cedric Tillman
Tillman appeared in the first four games this season and recorded 11 receptions for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He sustained a hamstring injury against the Detroit Lions and was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 30. He was designated for return on Nov. 3.
“Just bringing that big-body receiver, get some more size out there,” Tillman said. “I feel like I can make some plays for this team. We have another playmaker out there and also someone who’s going to help in the run game. We have good running backs.”
Tillman was a third-round pick of the Browns in 2023. He has 50 catches for 563 yards in his career. He’s a welcome addition with the passing game struggling.
“The more the merrier. But also just Ced, I think he’s a good threat in multiple ways of our offense,” Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel said. “I think in the run and the pass, and I think, with anything, Ced’s a big part of what we do as well, so having him back will be huge.”
Browns Want WR Jerry Jeudy More Involved
Heading into the year, Cleveland planned on Jerry Jeudy to be their true No. 1 receiver. Jeudy has been unable to replicate his Pro Bowl production from a year ago. Jeudy has just 22 catches for 257 yards this season. He has yet to find the end zone.
Jeudy was shut out in the Browns’ most recent outing. He was targeted twice. Cleveland wants to do more to get Jeudy involved.
“You know, that’s something we want to do,” Gabriel said. “Jerry’s really good. I want to get the ball into players’ hands that are really good and let them go do their thing. So, just want to emphasize that, and we did it throughout the year, but want to put it as a point of emphasis for sure.”
Jeudy and the Browns have a prime chance to get back on track Sunday against the struggling Jets. New York’s defense has been a weak spot all year and took another hit after trading away Pro Bowl cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. That opens the door for Jeudy and Tillman to find more space and make an impact in the passing game.
