Browns Make Myles Garrett Announcement Before Potentially Record-Breaking Bengals Game

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is arguably the best defensive player in football. When it comes to his own team, however, there is no debate.

The franchise announced on Friday, January 2 that the local chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) has named Garrett the Browns’ most valuable player for third consecutive season. Cleveland’s social media post also acknowledged offensive lineman Joel Bitonio for his work in the community.

“Big shout to Myles and Joel, who each received awards from the local PFWA chapter for the 2025 season,” the Browns posted to their official X account. “Myles was unanimously voted the PFWA Joe Thomas Award winner and Joel took home the PFWA Dino Lucarelli ‘Good Guy Award,’ both for the 3rd straight year!”

Myles Garrett Can Make History Twice Against Bengals on Sunday

Garrett is on the cusp of history in a couple of ways as the Browns head across the state to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 18.

First and foremost, he is one sack shy of the single-season record in that category. Garrett has 22 sacks to his name, which is leading the NFL by a significant margin in 2025 and is just a half-sack shy of the all-time mark shared by T.J. Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers and retired edge-rusher Michael Strahan.

Garrett is also the favorite to claim his second Defensive Player of the Year award in three years. He is leading the league with 32 tackles for loss along with leading in sacks and has added three forced fumbles.

Garrett claimed the honor for the first time in 2023 and can become just the 10th player in NFL history to win the DPOY award more than once in his career.

Garrett is the favorite to win DPOY honors whether he breaks the sack record against the Bengals or not. However, he is facing a couple of specific obstacles to history.

First, Cleveland added him to the injury report on Thursday with a hip issue. He was a limited participant in practice that day.

The second potential concern is a repeat of what the Pittsburgh Steelers did in Week 17, which was essentially to avoid at all costs giving up a sack to Garrett and putting quarterback Aaron Rodgers on highlight reels for years to come.

“I feel like they were more worried about keeping me away from Aaron than getting the win, and I think that’s what came back to bite him,” Garrett told reporters following the game.

Garrett has only tallied a half-sack over the previous two contests combined, getting partial credit for a takedown of Josh Allen during Cleveland’s narrow loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 16. But despite the mini-drought, Garrett was confident following the win against Pittsburgh that he will set the new all-time sack mark.

“However you want to draw it up, it’ll get done,” Garrett said.
