Browns’ Myles Garrett Shares Message for Rival TJ Watt

Myles Garrett is chasing history, but the Cleveland Browns defensive end made it clear that the pursuit of records doesn’t outweigh concern for a fellow player.

Garrett offered his support for Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end TJ Watt, who is dealing with a partially collapsed lung. His brother, JJ Watt, gave an update on the situation on social media.

“Yesterday TJ had successful surgery to stabilize and repair a partially collapsed lung suffered Wednesday after a dry needling treatment session at the facility,” JJ Watt said. “Recovery timeline is still TBD, but all went well and he is being released from the hospital today.”

Garrett is trying to chase down TJ Watt’s single-season record of 22.5 sacks, which he holds jointly with Hall of Famer Michael Strahan. The Browns star said he reached out after learning of the injury.

“I reached out to him. I don’t have his number or anything, but I reached out to him to see if he’s all right,” Garrett said. “So, I’m hoping for the best. At the end of the day, our teams may be rivals and they might create a rivalry between us, but he’s not my enemy. I’m hoping for the best for him and his health and hopefully he comes back soon.”

Bears Looking to Avoid Being Part of Myles Garrett’s Historic Run

The Browns face the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The Bears are well aware of the history Garrett is chasing and don’t want to be part of it.

“Obviously, he’s right there at the sack record, almost there at the sack record,” Bears quarterback Caleb Williams said this week. “And so, I’m going to try and make sure that he doesn’t get the sack record on us and on me.”

Garrett is used to added attention, whether it be chip blocks, double teams, or even triple teams.

“Of course, they want to keep me off the quarterback,” Garrett said. “Everyone does, and you know it’s more than just me to worry about. Like I’ve said, first you’ve got to stop the run and earn those opportunities to rush the passer and make them even want to do that. (Caleb) can move it pretty well, and they have a great rushing game and they have a great play-action game to move in the pocket and let him use his legs.

“So we’ve got to get him out of that if we want to have a chance to see him drop back. I have a lot of respect for how elusive he is and everything that they do when it comes to him having the ball in his hands.”

Browns’ Myles Garrett Not Focused on Money

Garrett demanded a trade earlier this offseason, but the Browns made it clear they had no interest in moving their superstar pass rusher. Cleveland instead locked him up with a $40 million-per-year extension that runs through the 2030 season.

The money, however, has never been Garrett’s driving force. If anything, the long-term security has given him even more freedom to play loose and unleash his full game.

“The money didn’t mean much to me,” he said. ‘”It’s nice to have the security, having it guaranteed and not being out there and knowing that if I got hurt, there would be nothing for the rest of my career that they had to give me. And that’s kind of security for my family and the family I hope to have in the future. But it was always about achieving the potential that I knew I had and working together and to create something that would stand the test of time.”

Garrett enters the Week 15 matchup against the Bears with 20 sacks. Three more would give him the record.
