Ahead of the just-passed NFL trade deadline, there were certainly plenty of rumblings around the Browns. That’s par for the course with a 2-6 team, especially one that appears so ill-equipped to make a serious splash in the upcoming second half of the season. But when those rumblings began to encroach on Myles Garrett territory–arguably the best defensive player in the NFL–it caught the attention of league observers everywhere.
Unfortunately for them, the Browns made clear that Garrett was not going anywhere at this season’s trade deadline. In fact, the Browns did not do much buying or selling, keeping the bulk of its veteran pieces in place and only trading off backup pass-rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to Chicago.
For Garrett, though, none of that mattered. While there were rumored conversations around trades involving Garrett, he said he spent most of last week–the team’s bye week–recuperating from a difficult loss in New England, where he recorded five sacks but still saw his team lose, 32-13.
Myles Garrett: ‘I Wasn’t Concerned’
Garrett was asked about the trade deadline and the Browns’ approach on Friday.
“I wasn’t concerned with anything involving a trade with me or anybody else on this team,” he said, flatly. “I was just focused on getting right, feeling better, getting my head in a better space after the week before and trying to find a way to continue bringing it every week.”
In fact, if Garrett is to be believed, he was not even aware that the deadline was on Tuesday.
“I think y’all were more concerned with the trade deadline than I was,” he said. “I didn’t even know what day it was until someone told me. So, me, I was just concerned about being home, seeing my family, being able to get back to my family members, seeing my niece, you know, get to be home and be around my parents. You know, that was of much more concerned to me about any more than any news that I was hearing here.”
Browns Got Offer of 3 1st-Round Picks for Myles Garrett
More specifically, was the report that the Eagles had tried to pry Garrett away from the Browns with an offer of three first-round picks. There was some question about the validity of that news, but Philadelphia GM Howie Roseman seemed to confirm it earlier in the week.
Not pursuing an opportunity to acquire a player like Garrett, who has 112.5 sacks in 125 games in his career, would be crazy, Roseman said. That doesn’t mean anything was close, of course.
Browns Moving On to Jets
But again, Garrett was not engaging.
“That’s got nothing to do with me,” he said. “What Howie and the Eagles choose to talk about and talk to Andrew about, that is of no concern until they bring me into the room. And until then, I’m focused on this team. But I haven’t heard any of those talks. I don’t read into any of those talks. And I have a team to help lead and help try to find a way to win every week and focus on the Jets.”
