Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders isn’t looking too far ahead despite his big performance against the Tennessee Titans.
Sanders threw for 364 yards and totaled four touchdowns against the Titans — the most impressive outing of his young NFL career and a clear glimpse at his ceiling. The performance stood out even more considering he was matched up with No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, who finished with just 117 passing yards and two scores. For a quarterback who slid to the fifth round, Sanders is proving not only that he belongs as an NFL starter, but that he has long-term potential.
After the game, Sanders and Ward linked up behind the scenes for a jersey swap. Ward joked that he would put the jersey on eBay after the game and asked Sanders what he would be doing in the offseason.
“Man, I gotta make it through the season first,” Sanders said in a video released by Well Off Media. “We got two different problems over here, buddy.”
Shedeur Sanders to Remain Browns Starter
Ward’s rookie campaign has been uneven. He’s thrown for 2,468 yards with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions, and Tennessee sits on just two wins. Still, as the No. 1 overall pick, Ward carries the security of a franchise investment. His role as the starter isn’t expected to change anytime soon.
Sanders’ path has been the opposite. He opened training camp as Cleveland’s fourth-string quarterback, worked his way up with patience and preparation, and seized his shot when it came.
His breakout performance against the Titans showcased real upside, but his long-term role is far from decided. Even after a career day, there’s no guarantee he’ll enter next season as the Browns’ unquestioned starter.
However, Sanders does not have to worry about his starting status the rest of the year. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski declared on Monday that he’ll be starting the final four games. Stefanski previously said the starting quarterback decision would be made on a week-to-week basis.
“We’ve been around each other now, going back to April, so I’ve seen constant improvement in a bunch of areas. But I also saw in that game some areas of improvement in some areas that we asked him to improve upon,” Stefanski said. “And I think that’s the fun part of coaching, is developing players and giving them the tools to improve in certain areas, if you will. And I think the fun part is when you have players like Shedeur, like our rookies, whoever it may be, that are very intentional about their own development as well.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Focused on Improvement
Sanders has continued to show steady week-to-week growth and is intent on maximizing every rep he gets. He noted improvement in his sideline communication and anticipation but acknowledged that there’s more work ahead. His focus now is identifying mistakes on film, learning from them, and applying those fixes moving forward.
“It’s a lot of things, I would say, that we go into a week trying to improve, and we gotta look at the film. I know I didn’t play perfect,” Sanders said. “Being able to see that, being able to go over and rekindle my thoughts on what I missed and why I missed it, to get to the root of everything, so then it won’t be a consistent problem. So, every week, we looking to change mentally, physically, and emotionally, so then we all are in a better place for next week.”
The Browns and Sanders has a stiffer test this week as they head on the road to take on the Chicago Bears.
