No doubt, when there is a Browns practice and No. 95 is not on the field, there is cause for concern. That was the case on Friday, as the Browns got in their final prep before heading to Las Vegas for an AFC cellar showdown with the Raiders. Star edge rusher Myles Garrett, who is leading the NFL in sacks and has a shot at the league’s all-time record, was not on the field.
No cause to panic, though, it turns out. Garrett simply sat out with an illness, and the team is expecting him to be healthy enough to play on Sunday. Garrett, who had four sacks on Sunday and tied Richard Dent’s three-game NFL record with 10.0 sacks going back to Week 8, did not appear on the team’s Friday injury report.
Dent set that mark back in 1984.
Myles Garrett, Browns Could Terrorize Raiders Offensive Line
Garrett leads the NFL with 15.0 sacks on the season for the Browns, putting him on pace for 25.5 sacks. The all-time record belongs to Michael Strahan of the Giants, who had 22.5 in 2001. If all goes according to plan, he could be in for a big week against the Raiders, who allow 3.1 sacks per game. That’s 26th in the NFL.
At Pro Football Focus, the Raiders’ offensive line is ranked No. 31 in the league, coming off a week in which it gave up 27 pressures to the Cowboys on Monday night. Dallas tallied five sacks in the game.
As PFF noted, “Due to Jackson Powers-Johnson’s injury, Will Putnam entered the lineup and played all 60 snaps at center. However, Putnam conceded six pressures, including three sacks, leading to a poor 17.6 PFF pass-blocking grade.”
Garrett, surely, will be licking his chops.
Myles Garrett Has ‘A Lot More to Give’
Fact is, Garrett could wrap up his 2025 season where it is, through 10 games, and still have what most would call an excellent pass-rushing season for the Browns. But defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said on Thursday that he notices that Garrett still has more in the tank as the team heads down the stretch run.
“He’s got a lot more to give and super proud of him for where he is right now, but this isn’t the final story yet,” Schwartz said. “He’s doing a really good job within the scheme and like I’ve told you guys before, I’m always most proud of the way he plays the run as opposed to how he rushes the passer. And there’s a lot to be proud of, the way he rushes the passer. …
“We got a lot more games to play, and there’s a lot more great things he can do for us. So that’s sort of where I am with it. We don’t need to postmortem for the season before the final chapter’s been written and he’s got a lot of chapters to write.”
Browns Revival Never Came
Of course, it’s not an easy season for Garrett, who had requested a trade from the Browns early in this calendar year before being granted a massive new four-year, $160 million contract that convinced him to stay put. He was hopeful that his staying would help lead a Browns revival, but for all his individual excellence, the team is still 2-8.
“It’s a blessing to have an opportunity to have five, four, however many (sacks) it is,” Garrett said this week. “So, I’m just grateful for that. You know, those guys were rushing their behinds off, and we always talk about four rushers equaling one, and I think we had a great day rushing the passer, and we all want some plays back.”
