Browns’ Shedeur Sanders Expected to Take Aim At Cam Ward in Week 14

It was just months ago that a video made the rounds showing two of the top quarterback prosects in the 2025 draft working out together, working on deep throws, talking football and the draft, and their approach in general. One of those quarterbacks was the Browns‘ Shedeur Sanders who was, at the time, considered the top competition to go as the first overall quarterback. The other was the favorite for that spot, Cam Ward.

We know what happened, of course. Sanders had arguably the most remarkable draft-day drop in league history, going from likely first-rounder down to the Browns in the fifth round. Ward maintained his spot at No. 1 and went to the Titans.

On Sunday, the two will be together again, in very different circumstances. Sanders is quarterbacking a Browns team that has been massively disappointing, and he’s now their third choice as the starter. Ward has been running the Titans all season, but it’s a team that is 1-11 and saw its coach, Bill Callahan, depart in mid-October.

Shedeur Sanders Head-to-Head With Cam Ward in Browns-Titans

Both Ward and Sanders have played like rookies, and the 2025 season is well lost for both franchises.

But Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot says that seeing Ward again on the opposite sideline, in a role that he might well have been meant for, will be a motivating factor for Sanders this week. It was known at the time of the draft, too, that Ward would have been the Browns’ choice, had they held onto the No. 2 pick.

“It’s really interesting that you have Shedeur Sanders going head-to-head with the quarterback who, the only quarterback in this draft that the Browns would have taken at No. 2 overall when all was said and done,” Cabot said on “The Orange and Brown Talk” podcast.

“It would have been Cam Ward. If they could have gotten their hands on him, they would have drafted him. Lo and behold, that didn’t happen. The Titans took him at No. 1 overall. He is 1-11, fired their head coach and here you have Shedeur Sanders who tumbled all the way down the fifth round, passed over by every single team five or six times, and he’s going up in this game against Cam Ward.”

Sanders Will Try to Make Point to Browns

Sanders now has two starts under his belt after his disastrous first showing in relief of Dillon Gabriel in Week 11 against the Ravens. The Browns are 1-1 in those games, and Sanders has gone 27-for-45 passing for 358 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in those games, and a rating of 90.8.

He has been sacked four times, which is an improvement over what was expected–Sanders struggled with over-scrambling in college. Now, he figures to have a point to make about last year’s draft, as well as to the Browns.

Said Cabot: “I think he is going to want to show the world that he should have been the No. 1 overall pick, that he should have been the quarterback that people were thinking about. And it’s another opportunity for him to go out there and not only show those things but also try to prove to the Cleveland Browns that they can stop looking for their next quarterback because they have him right here in their building.

“Not gonna be easy.”
