Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders spent a large chunk of time after Sunday’s 26-8 loss to the San Francisco 49ers talking about his lack of chemistry with his top receiver, Jerry Jeudy.
Sanders targeted Jeudy four times in the loss. Jeudy hauled in three of those passes for 26 yards. The lone miss to Jeudy was a big one. He had a step on the defender downfield but the ball sailed just out of reach. Jeudy walked to the sideline, shaking his head after the miss.
Wind was a factor in the game, but Sanders didn’t use that as an excuse for the miss.
“Overall, it’s about spending time in those situations and being able to gauge,” Sander said. “It was just a missed shot. When I miss that shot, I have to stay on myself to keep shooting.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Highlights ‘Trust’ With Jerry Jeudy
The Browns hung with the 49ers for the first half but some special teams errors and a failed fourth-down try made the game unravel. It was just Sanders’ second start and he said that he’s still working on building “trust” with his receivers.
“We ran the ball very well. When we got into passing situations, it wasn’t the best. It was a comfort level I think,” Sanders said. “As players and teammates, we have to be able to gel with each other and be comfortable in every situation. That takes time and a lot of things. It’s not going to be a microwave thing. It’s going to take time to be able to develop that chemistry with everybody and to be on the same page with Jerry.”
Sanders said he and Jeudy are not looking out of the same “lens” at this point. Jeudy had just one catch last week in Sanders’ starting debut against the Las Vegas Raiders.
“Of course, you want to get him the ball, but you’ve got to understand it takes time. I’m more of a trust person. That’s just what it boils down to,” Sanders said. “We have to spend time on task with all those guys and be able to see things out of the same lens.”
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Rips Playcalling Question
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski faced scrutiny for a failed fourth-down gamble that saw tight end Harold Fannin take a direct snap — a decision that backfired when Fannin fumbled, setting up the 49ers deep in Cleveland territory.
After the game, Sanders was asked for his thoughts on the play-calling, but he bristled at the question and made it clear he wasn’t interested in weighing in.
“First, that’s a rude question to ask — if I think it was a great call by my coach,” Sanders said. “I like being out there playing. So whatever that comes with, it comes with. We are never going to be up here pointing a finger at no coach or do anything like that. That’s extremely disrespectful and not my place. I’m thankful for being out there, honestly, and that he trusts us as an offense to go out there and execute. Did we execute? No we didn’t but I’m thankful we have that trust.”
Stefanski said that Sanders will start next week when the Browns take on the one-win Tennessee Titans.
