The Cleveland Browns are loaded at quarterback, and they can’t keep all of them.
A recent trade idea from Heavy’s Max Dible flipped rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders to the New York Jets for draft compensation.
Jets receive: quarterback Shedeur Sanders
Browns receive: a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick
“This is an unlikely trade given what the Jets paid for Justin Fields, who is entering just his fifth NFL season, and the fact that they still have Tyrod Taylor on the roster in the second season of a two-year, $12 million contract. But New York could move off of Fields with relative financial ease in 2026, the same spring that Taylor’s contract is up. So while it doesn’t feel like the appropriate time (perhaps a pre-deadline deal midseason would be more realistic based on how the first half of the year plays out), New York could theoretically pursue a player like Sanders as the potential QB of the future if they think he’s undervalued and can be had at a bargain,” Dible explained.
The Jets Don’t Have a Developmental QB in the Bullpen
Gang Green hopes Fields can transform into the franchise quarterback they have been looking for. However, if that plan fails, the Jets will be desperately searching for answers in 2026.
Taylor would be a free agent, Fields would have one year left on his deal, and beyond that, there would be a whole lot of nothing in the QB room.
Sanders, 23, “dropped in the draft, not because of his physical talent but because of his pre-draft interview process,” Dible explained.
Some draft analysts considered him a first-round prospect, while others were much lower on him.
Sanders ended up falling to the No. 144 overall pick in the fifth round. During the 2025 NFL draft, the Jets passed on Sanders five different times.
This trade would provide the Jets a mulligan and a backup plan just in case things don’t work out with Fields. Even if things do work out with Fields in New York, there aren’t many teams in the league that would complain about having too many good quarterbacks.
“Sanders has made an ‘impact’ in Browns training camp to this point, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. He has shown himself to be focused and hardworking, and he did have first- or second-round talent coming into the draft as a 23-year-old QB with four years of collegiate experience,” Dible said.

Jets Should Keep a Close Eye on How Things Play out in Cleveland
Cleveland’s QB room consists of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Sanders.
There is a legitimate chance that one of the two drafted rookie QBs could slip through the cracks.
If one of them does, particularly Sanders, the Jets should be all over it. Quarterbacks are like lottery tickets; the more of them you can have, the better.
The Jets are all in on Fields. However, they owe it to themselves to invest in multiple horses in this QB race to increase their odds of winning.
Investing multiple mid-round picks in a player via trade that the Jets passed on five times wouldn’t be a good look publicly. However, the team shouldn’t be making decisions based on public perception but rather trying to solve the game’s most important position once and for all.
Sanders is signed to a four-year, $4.6 million contract through the 2028 season.
