Browns Trade Proposal Sends Shedeur Sanders to New York

The Cleveland Browns traded Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the week, and many believe the team shouldn’t be done dealing quarterbacks. That includes Jason Burgos, who linked Shedeur Sanders to four different teams in intriguing trade ideas.

One of Burgos’ ideas was to send Sanders to the New York Jets, adding that New York could add a “high upside” option in its below-average quarterback room.

“New York Jets fans are having doubts their team will be able to turn Justin Fields into the star many have long thought he could be. He has looked rough at times during preseason and has forced the team to reconsider their current backup options. With the Browns QB room jam-pack, the Jets could get a high upside QB for cheap in a trade over the next two weeks. Plus, Sanders seems like a great fit for New York as well,” he wrote.

Could Shedeur Sanders Benefit From Trade?

While Sanders might be interested in playing for a non-Cleveland Browns team, going to the New York Jets doesn’t help his situation too much. Justin Fields will be the QB1, and barring anything drastic happening, should start for much of the year.

Sanders could beat Fields out, but there’s likely a better chance of him doing so with Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel.

For the Jets, too, playing in New York would only bring more spotlight to Sanders. FanSided’s Christopher Kline examined the situation a few months ago and even noted that the Jets “dodged a bullet” by not selecting Sanders, citing the media.

“That said, folks thought the Jets might draft a quarterback, too. Just in case. Fields is only signed for two years and he has yet to stand out as a clear-cut franchise player in his previous spots,” he wrote.

“The tape in Chicago was a mixed bag at best. He looked better in Pittsburgh, but not enough for the Steelers to keep him on the field once 36-year-old Russell Wilson was up to speed. Nabbing Sanders, whom many still view as a first round talent, in the third or fourth (or even fifth) round would have been viewed as a totally sensible investment in the moment. But think for a moment about the media circus that has followed the Jets for years, especially after Rodgers’ arrival.”

Are Shedeur Sanders’ Days in Cleveland Numbered?

The Cleveland Browns’ moving on from Pickett was ideal, but some believe it was a telling sign.

CBS Sports’ John Breech examined the Browns quarterback room and believes that, depending on the offer, Sanders is more likely to be traded than Gabriel.

“Without knowing what the Browns were offered, it’s impossible to say whether they made a good decision, but getting rid of at least one quarterback would have certainly made some sense. That being said, the Browns used a higher pick on Gabriel, which would seemed to indicate that they liked him more at the time, so if they had been willing to trade anyone at that point, Sanders probably would have been the guy to go,” Breech wrote.

Perhaps something will change in the future, but Sanders is in Cleveland for now.
