Bryce Huff Reveals 49ers Saved Him from Toxic Situation

T

he 2025 NFL season is almost here, and the San Francisco 49ers will go into it with a very different roster. Losing a handful of key players from the last few seasons and replacing them with cheaper and younger talent, a lot of uncertainty will surround the 49ers during their quest for a sixth Super Bowl title.

But the 49ers also did not shy away from making a splash, acquiring former Jets and Eagles pass rusher, Bryce Huff, in a trade to help bolster the defensive line. Two seasons removed from a 10 sack season, Huff struggled last season in his lone year with the Eagles and is eager to return to form this season. And now that Huff is with the 49ers, he is opening up about how hard his time in Philadelphia truly was.

Huff Feels that the 49ers ‘Saved Him’

Huff was hoping that the Eagles would trade him at some point, feeling that he was not a good fit in their scheme and was not being used well. On July 1, Huff did an interview with The SFNiners YouTube Channel and went in depth as to why he was not happy with the Eagles.

“”If I’m being 100% honest with you, I wanted a trade like fairly early on,” Huff said. “And just cause of how things went in Philly, I knew pretty early on it wasn’t a fit. I knew a trade wasn’t going to happen during the [2024] season. But I talked to my agent about it and was like, when it’s all set and done, I might need to step to put myself in the best position… I kind of knew where it was headed fairly early on into the season.”

Now, Huff is reunited with his former head coach with the Jets in Robert Saleh and with the 49ers in dire need of a guy to complement star pass rusher, Nick Bosa, 2025 will be a big year for him to prove that he is the long-term answer.

Looking Back on Huff’s Tenure with the Eagles

Despite signing a three-year deal with the Eagles, Huff never was able to earn a big role with the team. Playing in only 12 games due to a wrist injury with six starts, Huff’s snap count decreased as the season went on– leading to a major production decrease from the 27-year-old star. For the season, Huff finished with two sacks, one quarterback hit, 17 QB hurries and 20 QB pressures.

Huff restructured his contract with the 49ers upon his arrival, making it only a one-year commitment between the two sides. If Huff is unable to regain form, the 49ers can part with him without any issues. But if he returns to greatness, then the 49ers could try and extend him long-term, making him a cornerstone piece for the franchise for years to come.
