The Buffalo Bills entered the season as favorites, or at least co-favorites, to win the Super Bowl. But after a lackluster and devastating loss to the Houston Texans Thursday night, many in the Bills long-suffering fan base appear fed up and have gone online to demand changes at the top â mainly that is, with head coach Sean McDermott.
But after Houston backup quarterback Davis Mills somehow led a team that was 5-5 entering the game past reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen and the 7-3 Bills, 23-19, some major NFL media personalities have joined the mounting criticism of the 51-year-old McDermott who, in his ninth year at the Buffalo helm, has yet to guide the Bills to the Super Bowl despite having Allen as his quarterback for eight of those years.
Since his rookie year, when he sat out four games, Allen has not missed a single start, so the quarterback’s health has not been an issue.
âMcDermott HAS to go,â read one typical fan comment on social media. âThe team has tuned him out and for a defensive-minded head coach heâs ineffective and gets outcoached all the time. This franchise is allergic to winning because we are too nice. Do something Terry or it will be another 2 decades of mediocrity soon.â
Bills Owner Called to Action
“Terry” is Terry Pegula, the Bills’ billionaire owner who bought the team with his wife, Kim, in 2014 for $1.6 billion.
According to the financial magazine Forbes, 11 years after the Pegulas bought them, the Bills are valued at $5.95 billion. While the Pegula couple initially shared ownership of the team on an equal basis, Kim Pegula suffered a heart attack in 2022 that left her incapacitated.
A year later, according to a report by The Athletic, Terry Pegula became his wife’s court-appointed guardian, effectively making him sole owner of the Bills.
Now, Bills fans who have not seen a Lombardi Trophy in Buffalo in the entire history of the franchise, have had enough and are calling on Pegula to fire McDermott.
Veteran NFL Pundit Joins Chorus
On Friday, longtime sports radio host Jim Rome took the debate over McDermott’s future national.
“Let’s face it, Sean McDermott is in trouble. He is. And if he’s not, he should be,” the 61-year-old Rome said on his program which he now livestreams on social media. “He’s had a great run in Buffalo except for those few brief moments that have completely defined his time in Buffalo where he, and they have unraveled on the big stage.”
Rome then added that this season, the Bills are unraveling off-Broadway. They’re unraveling on the smaller stage. They’re unraveling in the regular season.
Fox Sports Hosts Blame McDermott, as Well
Fox Sports radio host Aaron Torres was even more emphatic, writing on his social media account, “Said two years ago when Buffalo gagged away home field in the AFC title game â all keeping Sean McDermott around was doing was wasting Josh Allen’s prime. Two years later, the Bills are somehow in a worse position than they were then. Should’ve pulled the plug a LONG time ago.”
Another Fox Sports host, Colin Cowherd, also blamed McDermott for the Bills’ struggles, while Rome wondered aloud what reason Pegula would have for retaining McDermott.
Fans Not Holding Back
“I’m just asking. What is the reason to keep going with this guy?” Rome said on his program. “Why would he not be in serious trouble at the end of the season unless there’s some kind of miraculous turnaround that nobody sees coming?”
As usual, fans didn’t hold back with their feelings about McDermott, with one demanding that the Bills “fire him to the sun,” and another declaring, “if the Bills ever want to be a serious contender, they must fire Sean McDermott.”
Those were just a small sample of the fan sentiment online, but another fan took the calls to the next level, going so far as to start a petition titled “Fire Sean McDermott.”
