Camryn Bynum Sends Message on Anthony Richardson, Colts QB Battle

Indianapolis Colts free-agent signing Camryn Bynum sounds optimistic about how the team’s highly anticipated quarterback battle will pan out for the 2025 season.

In a recent interview with NFL Network, Bynum weighed in on the Colts’ quarterback battle and expressed confidence “in both” Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones as the team’s 2025 starter — whichever one the coaches choose at the end of training camp.

“I think this is a great scenario for any quarterback to be in,” Bynum told NFL Network. “Obviously, it’s an uncomfortable spot because you’re competing for one spot, but as a competitor, that’s what you want. You don’t want things given to you, so both quarterbacks are in there grinding, trying to earn their way to be the starter this year. Both are looking extremely well and playing well in the spring.”

Bynum is a newcomer to the Colts after signing a four-year, $60 million contract with them in March. But as a new defensive leader and their projected starting free safety, his perspective on how veterans feel about the quarterback situation is interesting.

“I’m excited to see how it plays out, but no matter what, as a player on this defense, being able to go up against them, they’re giving us challenges,” Bynum said. “I think no matter who the team picks, and who the leadership picks at quarterback as the starter this season, I’m confident in both.”

Anthony Richardson ‘Believed to Have Recovered’ From Injury

On the subject of the Colts’ quarterback battle, the team has received some good news about Richardson and his recent shoulder injury in the lead-up to training camp.

According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, Richardson is “believed to have recovered” from the right shoulder injury that sidelined him for a portion of the team’s offseason. He had experienced soreness in his right shoulder in the spring, prompting some concern given that he underwent season-ending surgery on the same shoulder back in 2023.

“The team’s medical staff believed at the time that rest would alleviate the problem, and that appears to have proven true,” Holder wrote. Richardson also sought outside opinions from experts who concurred with that plan. Richardson has been in Florida for weeks working with his personal coaches throwing the ball with velocity, according to the source.”

While the Colts would love to have Richardson at 100%, though, Holder did note in his article that the Colts “have not had a chance to personally evaluate Richardson” because players have not yet begun to report to the team’s facility for the start of training camp.

So, before anyone celebrates Richardson’s imminent return, let’s wait until all the Colts’ players report on July 22 to make sure he doesn’t spend some time on an injury list.

Daniel Jones Has a Decent Headstart on Richardson

The Colts will be exactly where they want to be if Richardson is cleared to return to the field before the team’s first practice on July 23. But even if he does, Jones has run out to a significant lead in their quarterback competition, thanks to his exposure in the spring.

During mandatory minicamp in June, Colts head coach Shane Steichen praised Jones for his intelligence and ability to pick up the offense in a short amount of time. While Jones is new to the Colts, he started 69 games over the past six seasons with the New York Giants and has some of the “veteran” quarterback qualities that Richardson lacks.

“Very pleased with what we got right now. He’s been doing a hell of a job,” Steichen said on June 12. “Really smart football player. Learned the offense very quickly, making really good decisions out there through OTAs. Obviously, want to carry that over to training camp, but he’s done a really good job. Great command in the huddle. Ultimate pro.”

Richardson will still have a chance to catch Jones, but how much progress he shows — and how fast — will be subject to greater scrutiny if the veteran continues to thrive.
