Canucks Make Next Move After Big Quinn Hughes Blockbuster

The Vancouver Canucks committed to the next chapter of their franchise history last week. This is because the Canucks traded superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Zeev Buium, Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round pick. This was after Hughes was the subject of several trade rumors for quite some time.

With the Canucks struggling big time this season, they elected to pull the plug on the Hughes era in Vancouver and send him to the Wild for the best trade package possible. With this move, the Canucks moved on from one of the best defensemen in the sport but also brought in some very promising young players to go along with a first-round pick. Time will tell how this blockbuster trade ages for the Canucks, but there is absolutely no question that they will miss Hughes’ elite contributions immensely.

Now, after shocking the NHL by actually trading Hughes, the Canucks have made another move. However, the Canucks did not part ways with one of their players with this transaction, but instead are keeping one of them around.

Canucks Sign Forward Max Sasson to a Multi-Year Contract Extension

The Canucks have announced that they have signed forward Max Sasson to a two-year, $2 million contract extension. Starting during the 2026-27 season, Sasson will have an average annual value (AAV) of $1 million.

Here is what Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said about signing Sasson to this new two-year contract extension:

“Max has made the most of the opportunity presented to him this season and has provided us with some solid play. Since signing with the organization out of college, he has shown significant improvement, using his speed and skill to build a strong foundation for his future. Max was a key contributor to our championship run last year in Abbotsford, and we’re excited to watch him continue to grow as a player.”

Seeing the Canucks sign Sasson to a contract extension is not surprising in the slightest. The 25-year-old forward has been a rare bright spot for the Canucks this season, as he is cementing himself as a legitimate NHL player. In 29 games on the year with the Pacific Division club, he has set new career highs with six goals and eight points. This is after he had three goals, four assists, and seven points in his first 29 career NHL games this past season with the Canucks.

Canucks Should Have More Moves on the Way

With the Canucks having such a tough season, the expectation is that they are not done making moves yet. This is especially the case when it comes to trading, as they have several trade candidates to keep a very close eye on as we continue to get closer to the deadline.

Kiefer Sherwood is the Canucks’ most notable trade candidate, while other players like Lukas Reichel, Evander Kane, Tyler Myers, David Kampf, and Nils Hoglander also have the potential to be dealt.

Yet, for now, the Canucks are keeping one of their players around by signing Sasson to this nice new contract extension.
