Canucks Trade Pitch Lands Them Former 40-Goal Scorer

The Vancouver Canucks have made some changes to their roster this summer. They notably acquired Evander Kane from the Edmonton Oilers and signed Pierre-Olivier Joseph. They also traded away forward Dakota Joshua and goalie Arturs Silovs in separate deals.

Yet, the Canucks should still make another move before the season is here. When looking at their roster, it is apparent that they need a second-line center. One player who stands out as a prime potential target for the Canucks is Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann.

Heavy Sports has a trade proposal that has Seattle sending McCann to Vancouver in a late-summer swap.

Kraken Get:

Jared McCann Is Popular Name in Rumor Mill

Leading up to the 2025 NHL trade deadline, McCann was the subject of trade speculation. While he was not moved this past season, trade rumors have continued to follow him into this summer. It is understandable, as the Kraken once again missed the playoffs in 2024-25.

Due to the questions surrounding McCann’s future in Seattle, he has landed the No. 20 spot on The Fourth Period’s 2025 Summer Trade Watch List.

“With two more years left on his contract, McCann is an attractive add for teams looking to add more scoring punch to their lineup,” The Fourth Period reported. “He has a 10-team no-trade list and has some say in where he winds up, if the Kraken decide to trade him.”

With McCann being a skilled forward who is a consistent 60-point threat, the Canucks should work hard to bring their 2014 first-round pick back to Vancouver.

Canucks Have Been Linked to McCann

The Fourth Period also reported on their 2025 Summer Trade Watch List that the Canucks are one of the teams linked to McCann. In addition, The Fourth Period reported that the Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers are linked to McCann as well.

The Canucks need an upgrade at their second-line center spot, so them being connected to McCann is entirely understandable. Due to his versatility, he can play both down the middle and on the wing, which is a nice bonus. Furthermore, his strong two-way play would make him an option for both Vancouver’s power play and penalty kill if acquired.

McCann appeared in 82 games last season, posting 22 goals and 61 points. This was the third season in a row where he had at least 20 goals and 60 points. This includes the 2022-23 season, when he posted career highs with 40 goals and 70 points in 79 games.

Why Canucks Could Land McCann With This Offer

McCann has an affordable $5 million cap hit until the end of the 2026-27. With this, the Kraken will expect a good return in any potential move involving McCann. The Canucks offering their 2026 first-round pick, Aatu Raty, and Teddy Blueger could be enough to land McCann.

With McCann having a good contract and being a legitimate top-six forward, Seattle would likely expect a first-round pick in any trade. This is especially true with the Kraken coming off another year of being a non-playoff team.

A young forward with good upside, like Raty, certainly could grab the attention of the Kraken. While the 22-year-old has yet to break out, he has the potential to become a top-nine forward. As for Blueger, the Kraken would be adding a veteran bottom-six forward who kills penalties and could help mentor their younger players.
