Signs are pointing up for quarterback Kyler Murray.
ESPNâs Adam Schefter said Monday on the Pat McAfee Show that Murray is expected to return from injury when the Arizona Cardinals visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9.
âTheyâre on a bye this week. My understanding all along has been that he will be back for Monday Night Football two weeks from tonight, at Dallas,” Schefter said.
Itâll be a homecoming for Murray, who grew up in Lewisville, a suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Cardinals Squander Brissett’s Strong Performance
Murray has missed two straight games with a foot injury he sustained in a Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans. He was limited during practice last week and listed as questionable on Friday. But with the bye upcoming, the Cardinals opted to turn back to veteran backup Jacoby Brissett for Sundayâs game against the Green Bay Packers.
Brissett played well in his second straight start, completing 25-of-36 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns. But the Packers overcame a late deficit to win 27-23 on a 1-yard run by Josh Jacobs with 1:50 remaining.
The Cardinals (2-5) have now lost five straight games, albeit by a combined 13 points.
Cardinals Have Struggled to Protect Murray
The Cardinals are off this week and donât play again until Nov. 3 in Dallas. They will need their full complement of offensive weapons to keep up with the Cowboys, who lead the NFL in total offense (390.6 yards per game) and rank third in scoring (31.7 points per game).
The 28-year-old Murray is completing 68.3% of his passes this season for 962 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. But he has also been sacked 16 times, an alarmingly high number considering heâs played just five games.
Before this season, the two-time Pro Bowler hadnât missed a game since 2023, when he returned after sitting out nearly 11 months with a torn ACL.
Despite Brissettâs solid play, the Cardinals rank 20th in passing offense (199.9 yards per game).
Cardinals Perplexed by String of Close Losses
Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon seemed at a loss after yet another nailbiting defeat, saying thereâs âno magical answerâ to explain his teamâs inability to pull out close games.
âWeâre hitting the bye here on a kid, and we dug ourselves a hole,â Gannon said Sunday, via the Arizona Republic. âThereâs no doubt about it, and weâre going to have to dig ourselves out of it. And itâs going to be us that does it. Weâve got to reset ourselves, and then weâll come back to work. ⦠Play better, coach better.â
