Cardinals Linked to Two-Time All-Star Free Agent Starting Pitcher

The St. Louis Cardinals are in the middle of a rebuild and are not expected to be a top team this season because of it. While this is the case, the Cardinals have been off to a decent start to the 2026 season. At the time of this writing, the Cardinals have a 6-5 record and are fourth in the National League Central standings.

When looking at the Cardinals’ roster, one area that they could look to improve is their pitching depth. Adding another experienced starting pitcher to their roster would be beneficial for the Cardinals, and it is fair to wonder if they could look to add to their group because of it.

Due to this, the Cardinals are now being linked to a notable remaining free agent starting pitcher during the early days of April.

Cardinals Named a Potential Landing Spot for Two-Time All-Star Pitcher Marcus Stroman

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer recently looked at some of the best remaining free agents and named potential landing spots for them. Marcus Stroman was among the players discussed, and it makes sense when noting that he is easily one of the most notable free agents left.

Rymer then mentioned the Cardinals as among the potential landing spots for Stroman.

“Stroman’s stuff is just not what it used to be. Whereas he could once sit in the low-to-mid 90s with his sinker, the pitch averaged just 89.8 mph last year. His contact rate was higher than it had been since back in 2015. Even so, this is a guy with a history of having a chip on his shoulder. He also has a history of throwing strikes and getting ground balls, qualities that are never not useful,” Rymer wrote.

When looking at the Cardinals’ roster, Stroman would have the potential to be a decent pickup for them. He would provide them with another starting pitcher with experience and could give their rotation a bit of a boost because of it. This is especially so if he regained some of his previous form in St. Louis.

Stroman is coming off a shaky 2025 season with the New York Yankees, though. In nine appearances with the American League East club this past campaign, he had a 3-2 record, a 6.23 ERA, and 26 strikeouts.

Yet, when noting that Stroman was an All-Star just back during the 2023 season with the Chicago Cubs, he could be a good low-risk pitcher for the Cardinals to take a chance on. If he bounced back in St. Louis, he could end up being a good trade chip for the Cardinals near the deadline.

Stroman Should Be Able to Land A Contract

Whether it is with the Cardinals or another team, it would not be surprising if Stroman lands a contract soon. Teams are always on the hunt for pitching depth, and Stroman is one of the best options still available in free agency.

Stroman’s strong resume also adds to his appeal, as he is a two-time All-Star with 11 years of major league experience. With this, it will be interesting to see where he ends up landing from here. The Cardinals do look like an intriguing potential destination for him.
