Carlos Alcaraz will not feature in the Davis Cup on Sunday with Spain due to play Australia.

Both Spain and Australia have already qualified for the final phase of the Davis Cup in Malaga, which begins in November.

As a result, the 21-year-old has opted not to play on Sunday and did not take part in training with his Spanish teammates on Saturday.

Alcaraz will take the weekend off before travelling to Berlin on Tuesday to compete in Laver Cup.

Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, has urged Alcaraz to prioritise rest after a hectic schedule this year.

‘He was exhausted, mentally exhausted,’ Mouratoglou said this week.

‘I am not surprised that he is saying that he had so many thoughts and so many emotions that he couldn’t deal with,” the Frenchman said.

‘That is exactly the consequence of someone who is emotionally drained. He’s very, very emotional. We’ve seen him cramp many times already.

‘If you look at Roger, Rafa, and Novak, have you seen them cramp once in a match? All their careers? He cramped many times already, only at 20. He’s an emotional player.

‘So I think that knowing that, in the future, they will have to think of a calendar where he has enough rest – mental rest, not physical rest. Mental rest. I think it is very important for his future.’
