Entering Week 4 of the college football season, perfection has already slipped away for several big-name programs. Teams like Notre Dame and Clemson both sit with two losses through three games. But the No. 4 Miami Hurricanes remain undefeated — and the question is whether they can keep it that way.
Miami has opened 3-0, with wins over Notre Dame, Bethune-Cookman, and USF. It’s the third straight season they’ve started this way. In 2024, the Hurricanes went 9-0 before stumbling down the stretch, dropping two of their last three games and missing out on both the ACC title game and the College Football Playoff.
Head coach Mario Cristobal hopes this year will be different. He and Miami are off to a good start but could they actually deliver the program’s first undefeated regular season since 2002? USA Today’s Matt Hayes believes it’s possible.
“Have you seen the schedule? A road trip to rival Florida State is the only potential hiccup for a complete team with motivated QB Carson Beck,” Hayes wrote.
Hayes’ point holds weight. Miami’s only ranked opponent left is that October 4 trip to Florida State. Still, Week 4’s showdown with the Florida Gators shouldn’t be overlooked. ESPN BET currently has the Hurricanes as 7.5-point favorites.
Is The U Back?
The Hurricanes began the season ranked No. 10 in the AP poll. In just three weeks, they’ve climbed six spots to No. 4, thanks to wins over then-No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 18 USF. The Fighting Irish dropped to No. 24 while the Bulls completely fell out of the top-25, but the résumé boost was enough to fuel Miami’s rise.
Naturally, the question surfaces once again: is The U back?
“Yes,” CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford said. “Miami is three spots too low right now. I think Miami is the best team in college football after the third week of the season based on what we’ve seen in eye test.”
This isn’t the first time optimism has swirled around Miami. In 2017, under Mark Richt, the Hurricanes jumped out to a 10-0 start before crashing with three straight losses. That season still marked Miami’s first double-digit win campaign in 14 years. More recently, Cristobal’s squad went 10-3 in 2024 but faltered late when the team’s defense became a liability.
Carson Beck gives Miami Hurricanes best chance in decades
The difference this year might be quarterback Carson Beck. The former Georgia signal-caller brought SEC experience and talent with him to Coral Gables, and through three games he has looked the part.
Beck has completed 65 of 82 passes (79.3%) for 812 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. His completion percentage ranks first nationally, and his poise has elevated Miami’s offense. Supported by one of the country’s best offensive lines and a talented group of skill players, Beck is positioned to lead the Hurricanes to heights they haven’t reached in more than two decades.
The roster Cristobal has assembled gives him that opportunity. Over the last three seasons, Miami has landed recruiting classes ranked No. 8, No. 6, and No. 13, while also pulling in transfer portal hauls ranked No. 7, No. 10, and No. 3. With a top-tier defense complementing Beck’s efficient play, the Hurricanes may finally have the formula to finish what they’ve started.
