After an active start to the offseason, the Boston Celtics stayed put at pick No. 28 in the 2025 NBA Draft and selected Hugo Gonzalez from Real Madrid—passing on a trade-up despite rumors of lottery movement.
While not a household name, Gonzalez was once a projected top-five pick and still holds considerable upside, according to multiple scouts.

And most notably, DraftExpress’s Jonathan Givony once had Gonzalez ranked as a top five prospect in the class.
Celtics’ Brad Stevens Praises Gonzalez
Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens made it clear this wasn’t just a flyer.
“He’s tough, he’s hard-playing, he cuts, he goes after the ball, he competes,” Stevens said. “He’s got all the intangibles of a winning basketball player.”
Celtics’ Roster Shake-Up Opens Opportunity
Boston recently traded Jrue Holiday to Portland and Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta, clearing salary but also minutes for potential contributors.
With Jayson Tatum expected to miss most—if not all—of the season due to his Achilles injury, there may be real opportunity for Gonzalez to carve out a role if he shows promise in Summer League, training camp, or in the G League with the Maine Celtics.
Last year’s pick, Baylor Scheierman, followed a similar route and eventually made an impact after developing in the G League. That path could now be a model for Gonzalez.
